Alphabet chairman Eric Schmidt appointed to Pentagon advisory board

Sean Ridgeley | Business, Financial & Legal | Mar 3, 2016 4:03 PM CST

As once predicted by Wikileaks, former Google CEO and current Alphabet chairman Eric Schmidt has been appointed to the Defense Innovation Advisory Board. The goal: keep the Pentagon up on Silicon Valley happenings and inform them on how they can be applied at the Department of Defense.

Secretary of Defense Ashton Carton, who appointed Schmidt, says he has a "unique perspective on the latest practices in harnessing and encouraging innovation."

He's certainly no stranger to the Obama administration, appearing at technology leader summits with the nation's leader as well as in circles with Hillary Clinton. The relationships aren't always amicable, though: the FTC almost sued Google for antitrust violations just three years ago, and Google is expected to joint file an amicus brief today with other tech giants in defense of Apple's smartphone encryption stance.

Twitter, Reddit file brief in support of Apple's encryption stance

Sean Ridgeley | Business, Financial & Legal | Mar 3, 2016 3:55 PM CST

As promised last week, tech giants -- and some smaller folk -- have just now jointly filed an amicus brief in support of Apple's stance on smartphone encryption. (An amicus brief is a filing that allows those not directly involved in a case to have their say in it.)

Apple has been battling for the right to encryption publicly and in court for some time now; with Twitter, eBay, LinkedIn, Reddit and others giving its legal backing today with this brief, its position is strengthened significantly.

The 37-page document doesn't mince words. It starts by aggressively criticizing the US government's methods but also explains the importance of the right to privacy today, the result of which is something of a manifesto for the information age.

Dwarfs go wild with a Grand Campaign in Total War: Warhammer

Jeff Williams | Gaming | Mar 3, 2016 2:02 PM CST

The Dwarfs of Warhammer are a much more dynamic species than you'd think. Capable in the arts of diplomacy as much as they are in fighting and engineering. The campaign is no less complex and full of wonder. And the newest developer walkthrough shows off the intricacies of their campaign.

Dwarfs go wild with a Grand Campaign in Total War: Warhammer

What's interesting is how the tech tree differs quite vastly in the directions you can go. There are two core disciplines, the Way of the Guilds which lets you improve the more domestic-based issues (and help improve your aptitude for diplomacy), such as reducing the nasty vampiric corruption, and then the Way of the Clans branch, which is the war-making section.

One of the best parts of being a Dwarf? Being able to record and settle grudges with enemy and friendly factions. No one gets away with messing you, and it's one of the major parts of playing as a Dwarf. Check out the video, they delve deep into the overall campaign mechanics.

DiRT Rally is one of the best racing games that's ever been created. Not because of the intense realism and well well rendered tracks, but because it's so incredibly fun to play. And the latest trailer shows off some of the slick driving skills from the best drivers in the community.

DiRT Rally trailer shows the unbelievable driving skills out there

Codemasters has a thriving community around their DiRT series of games, and Rally is no exception. Even Finn himself wants an offline campaign in Star Wars Battlefront

Jeff Williams | Gaming | Mar 3, 2016 10:03 AM CST

A single-player, story campaign has been one of the most wished for components of Star Wars Battlefront. It seems that EA and DICE have been strangely resistent to the idea though. The offline missions leave a lot to be desired and while they're fun, they aren't really in the spirit of Star Wars. We need that overarching narrative. Even John Boyega, Finn from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, wants a full-on story campaign. And he's got a date with EA UK to talk more about it.

Even Finn himself wants an offline campaign in Star Wars Battlefront

The actor admitted that he's a long-time Battlefront fan, and it looks like he's less than impressed with the "missions" portion of the game, and hopefully his input can help to change it for the better. Who knows, maybe we''ll get a story campaign leading up to the defection of Finn as a result his collaboration.
