Smash Bros. Ultimate physical copies require a day 1 patch

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai has revealed in his recent column on Famitsu, that their will be a day 1 update for physical release buyers of Smash Ultimate. Digital buyers will not have to download the update and it isn't clear how big the initial download will be.

Here is what Sakurai had to say in full "We will distribute our first update on launch day. Players who purchased the digital version don't need to worry, but players who purchased the physical version should apply this day-one patch before you play. This will also prevent your replays from going off-track. By the way, if you save your replays as videos, you can keep them forever, but note that they take up a lot of space!" Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be launching exclusively on the Nintendo Switch on December 7th.

3DMark's new Ray Tracing benchmark to be teased December 8

Anthony Garreffa | Video Cards & GPUs | Nov 29, 2018 9:44 PM CST

If you own one of NVIDIA's new GeForce RTX graphics cards there's not much you can do with it with real-time ray tracing right now apart from Battlefield V (if you can even get it to work with RTX that is), but that'll soon change with 3DMark's new ray tracing benchmark.

3DMark's new Ray Tracing benchmark to be teased December 8

The new 3DMark Real-Time Ray Tracing Benchmark Port Royal will be teased ahead of its January 2019 launch at the GALAX GOC Grand Final overcloccking event in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam on December 8. What makes this special is that UL Benchmarks will be the first to market with a dedicated real-time ray tracing benchmark for gamers, where they can (get this) test real-time ray tracing performance of any graphics card that supports Microsoft's DirectX Raytracing standard, DXR.

UL Benchmarks explains: "Real-time ray tracing promises to bring new levels of realism to in-game graphics. Port Royal uses DirectX Raytracing to enhance reflections, shadows, and other effects that are difficult to achieve with traditional rendering techniques. As well as benchmarking performance, 3DMark Port Royal is a realistic and practical example of what to expect from ray tracing in upcoming games-ray tracing effects running in real-time at reasonable frame rates at 2560 x 1440 resolution".

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Nov 29, 2018 8:31 PM CST

New rumors have surfaced on Rocksteady's new game which should be a new Superman game, something that could be called Superman: World's Finest.

New rumors on Rocksteady's upcoming Superman game leaks

The latest report is coming from a spotting of the game on Game System Requirements by ResetEra, but the name 'Superman: World's Finest' isn't new as it did turn up from a 4chan leak before E3 2018. This news is important as we're getting close to The Game Awards event, where it would be a huge deal to unveil a new Superman game.

Remember that Batman Arkham developer Rocksteady Games listed a bunch of jobs earlier this year for "a AAA title on the next generation platforms". The rumor at the time teased an open-world game that would let you play as Superman, Batman, Robin, and others.

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Nov 29, 2018 5:34 PM CST

BioWare is making a new Dragon Age game, and it could see a reveal--or at the very least an official stage confirmation--at The Game Awards 2018.

Dragon Age 4 may be revealed next month

We've known BioWare is making a new Dragon Age game for a while now. Studio executive producer Mark Darrah teased the project back in 2016 and ever since then bits and pieces have ebbed into the sea of news. Thanks to this flow we actually know a fair bit about the new Dragon Age game.

But we may learn even more very, very soon. BioWare General Manager Casey Hudson says new info will be shared next month, leading us to believe Dragon Age 4 (or whatever it's called) could be formally revealed or at the very least officially confirmed during The Game Awards 2018.

Obsidian's new RPG teased with Fallout, BioShock-like ads

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Nov 29, 2018 3:24 PM CST

Obsidian's new RPG has yet to be announced, but the devs give us a sampling of its unique visual style.

Obsidian's new RPG teased with Fallout, BioShock-like ads

New banners on Obsidian Entertainment's official website offer a small look at its new RPG, namely its artistic flair. Sources told TweakTown in 2017 that the new RPG is based in a new IP, and aims to be Obsidian's answer to Fallout--which is only fitting given Fallout series creator Tim Cain is leading the project.

While these details have yet to be verified, the new fourth-wall breaking advertisements seem to align with our sources' info. The ads channel an older 1950's vintage Fallout- and BioShock-esque style, bringing to mind an age of sci-fi comics, nuclear families, and dreams of flying cars.

PlayStation Classic specs revealed

Sony's new $100 PlayStation Classic packs enough power for optimum emulation, but the software throws off performance.

PlayStation Classic specs revealed

Retro mini consoles are all the rage these days and offer the likes of Sony and Nintendo ways to make a quick buck. These boxes are cheap to make and cash in on nostalgia, but unlike the NES and SNES Classic Editions, Sony's latest PlayStation mini actually has decent specifications for old-school emulation.

According to a teardown from Eurogamer, the micro-console features a MediaTek MT8167A SoC (the same used in Acer's 10-inch Iconia tablet) alongside 1GB of 1866MHz RAM.

Nintendo scraps controversial Creator's Program

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Nov 29, 2018 11:11 AM CST

Nintendo has decided to relax its vice grip on IP protection and give YouTubers, livestreamers, and content creators more flexibility on covering its games.

Nintendo scraps controversial Creator's Program

Nintendo is tired of letting its control issues get in the way of free press, exposure, and accessibility, and has now decided to kill off its strict Creator's Program. The company announced that the Creator's Program, which instilled strong regulations that content creators had to uphold lest they face channel strikes or even IP infringement, is shutting down in December 2018. The games-maker has replaced the draconian ruleset with a more creator-friendly set of guidelines (but there's still some similarities and red flags).

First off, Nintendo still wants its cut of advertisement revenue. Content creators can't monetize videos of Nintendo-copyrighted content unless the company says so, and whenever you earn any money from Nintendo Game Content (NGC) it goes to Nintendo first and you get to keep the rest. That part hasn't changed.
