MSI has added a new BIOS feature to its AMD AM5 motherboards called High-Efficiency Mode, and the motherboard manufacturer arguably couldn't have picked a better time. With EXPO ULL memory kits carrying premiums of up to 79% over standard EXPO kits, MSI is offering users a way to get close to ULL-level memory latency without having to buy new memory.

The feature works by automatically tightening secondary and tertiary memory subtimings on standard DDR5 kits. EXPO ULL profiles use the same approach when factory-validated on compatible modules. MSI tested the feature on a Ryzen 7 9800X3D paired with an MSI B850MPOWER, comparing a standard DDR5-6000 CL30 kit against a G.Skill EXPO ULL kit with the same primary timings.

The standard kit measured 79.4ns of latency in AIDA64 with High-Efficiency Mode disabled. MSI recommends starting with a conservative preset and stress testing with tools like MemTest86 or OCCT before pushing further, since tighter timings can cause instability depending on the memory controller, the specific memory ICs, and the board revision.

The feature also works with EXPO ULL kits, but the gains are minimal, dropping latency from 71.4ns to 71.1ns. That is because the feature and the ULL profile are essentially doing the same thing, leaving little to gain once the tighter subtimings are already in place. The gains are therefore most meaningful on standard memory that ships with more conservative subtimings.

One caveat worth keeping in mind is that AIDA64's latency figure is a synthetic measurement, and MSI did not publish any game benchmarks alongside the latency numbers.
