Introduction & Specification Details and Close-up

Bose's Lifestyle brand dates back to the 1990s, and as someone who grew up during that era and spent some time with a Bose home theater system at a relative's house as a kid, it's easy to remember how 'different' and non-traditional it was compared to just about every other home audio and speaker system. Bose Lifestyle has always been about delivering big sound in a compact, sleek design that eschews traditional bookshelf or box-style speaker designs for small enclosed modules and compact woofers built around air pressure to create a punchy, clean low-end. This is a roundabout way of saying that most home audio speakers in 2026 are non-traditional, thanks to the rise of soundbars and a similar focus on compact speakers that deliver a big sound.

In that sense, unlike the series' debut decades ago, the Bose Lifestyle Ultra Speaker's main competition is your everyday speaker or soundbar, compact Bluetooth speaker, or something from Sonos's popular range of home audio solutions like the Sonos Era 100. Although it can easily be used as a single unit, the Bose Lifestyle Ultra Speaker, which is competitively priced at $299.00 USD, can also be paired with a second Bose Lifestyle Ultra Speaker for a more enveloping stereo experience, as well as a Bose soundbar and dedicated subwoofer for a more complete home theater sound experience. There's versatility here, to be sure. Still, its primary goal is to deliver wireless audio over WiFi or Bluetooth, with support for Apple AirPlay, Google Cast, Spotify Connect, and Alexa+ voice controls.

Going back to the beginnings of the Bose Lifestyle series, the Bose Lifestyle Ultra Speaker continues the legacy of delivering big sound in a relatively small package. When it comes to a speaker that you'll probably mostly use for listening to music, sound quality takes precedence over all of the nice add-ons. Here, the signature sound that Bose is renowned for comes across almost immediately. Crisp and detailed mid-range and high frequencies, with bass that doesn't muddy things up while being as booming and punchy as you could hope for from a compact speaker this size.

Design & Setup and Software

Design

With its cylindrical shape and fabric covering on the front (which isn't removable), the Bose Lifestyle Ultra Speaker has the look of a traditional speaker, even though it's anything but. As an active at-home speaker, it requires a power source, so there's no battery inside, meaning it's not a take-anywhere Bluetooth speaker or even water-resistant for outdoor use. Although compact, it's a weighty 1.66kg unit thanks to Bose's proprietary TrueSpatial and CleanBass technology, which dictates how its various speaker drivers and subwoofer are configured, tuned, and arranged. Perhaps the most notable design choice from an audio perspective is that the TrueSpatial audio includes three drivers (3-inch, 1-inch, and 1.5-inch), with one of those being up-firing. Although Bose doesn't offer up technical information on its proprietary speaker designs, which has been a sticking point with audio purists for many years, the proof, as they say, is in the pudding.

When paired with the internal woofer, which features a pretty small QuietPort acoustic opening on the rear for blasting out clean and punchy low-end frequencies, it's a design built to fill a room by taking a stereo signal and creating a virtual multi-speaker setup in a single box. And in execution, it is impressive how 'big,' crisp, and detailed the sound is, even in a large room. For those wanting a more traditional stereo experience with physically separated sound you can pinpoint, you can pair a second Bose Lifestyle Ultra Speaker. Although that effectively doubles the cost and power requirements, as an active speaker designed for a single location, the good news is that you can pick up a second Bose Lifestyle Ultra Speaker later on.

Now, in terms of its functionality, the Bose Lifestyle Ultra Speaker is designed for those who stream their audio from a smartphone, tablet, or WiFi device. Basically, it's an Apple AirPlay, Google Cast, and Spotify speaker first and foremost, with the 3.5mm auxiliary port there for connecting to a device like a record player. What the Bose Lifestyle Ultra Speaker isn't is a home theater speaker or soundbar replacement, at least not on its own. For connecting to a TV, it needs to be paired with a Bose Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar, where one or more Bose Lifestyle Ultra Speakers can create a surround sound setup for watching movies and streaming shows.

The design places all of its physical touch controls on the top of the speaker, and they're all laid out in a fairly intuitive manner. Here you've got a Bluetooth button for pairing, volume and media controls arranged on a large circle, and a microphone button. Yes, one of the cooler features of the Bose Lifestyle Ultra Speaker is that it has Amazon Alexa built-in so you can use your voice to do things like play a certain piece of music, skip a song, or pump up the volume. This is entirely optional, though it adds to the ease of use and is a definite plus for those who have grown accustomed to voice commands.

Setup and Software

The Bose Lifestyle Ultra Speaker is technically a plug-and-play device, but the whole setup process can be a little cumbersome in that it not only requires the Bose app (which is available for Android and iOS) to work, but you also need a Bose account and need to connect it to your WiFi network for updating and initializing. The whole process took us several minutes with some hurdles that required pausing a VPN service, but once the speaker is recognized and connected to your network, Bluetooth or WiFi access is quick and seamless.

As for the Bose app, although minimal and clean, there's very little customization on offer. When connected as a standalone speaker, the only controls you have over shaping the sound are increasing or decreasing the Bass, Mids, and High frequencies. There's no EQ here, but that's not unusual for a Bose product. One thing missing is the ability to tune the sound for a room, as there's no option to access Bose's CustomTune technology that uses a microphone to adjust and tune the sound based on the speaker's exact placement within an environment. Ultimately, the Bose app only feels like something you need for that initial setup or pairing a second Bose Lifestyle Ultra Speaker, as once it's connected, you'll be in apps like Spotify or using Apple AirPlay or Google Cast tools.

Performance

In our time with the Bose Lifestyle Ultra Speaker, after the initial setup, we didn't experience any issues with wireless streaming or issuing voice commands. As an active speaker, it's there whenever you need it, whether it's installed in a kitchen, lounge, or elsewhere. That said, we would have liked to have seen more than a single 3.5mm connection, such as an additional optical input or even HDMI eARC for connecting to more devices.

One thing to note when it comes to the TrueSpatial design that includes an up-firing driver is that the Bose Lifestyle Ultra Speaker works best when there's clearance above the unit, specifically, space between it and the ceiling. This is something we noticed when initially installing it in a bookshelf, which is not recommended. With that out of the way, we spent our first few hours with the Bose Lifestyle Ultra Speaker listening to a range of jazz, classical, and electronic music recordings. Although, like many compact speakers, there's not enough room to really capture and amplify sub-bass frequencies, the punchy and clean bass sound is still impressive even when listening to a track like Cirkl from Norwegian electronic music and disco afficionado Lindstrom.

Likewise, when paired with some of the best-sounding Blue Note albums like Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers' Moanin' and Cannonball Adderley's Somethin' Else, the instruments come through with detail, presence, and clarity. The best thing about the Bose Lifestyle Ultra Speaker's capabilities as a music speaker, in standalone form, is that it doesn't sound like one of the countless portable Bluetooth speaker boxes or pills on the market. Now, without the ability to fine-tune EQ settings, you are beholden to the Bose sound that can, at times, come across as a little clinical or artificial in its amplification. Basically, it's a bright and punchy sound versus one that is warm or neutral. We'd even settle for a bunch of presets.

Final Thoughts

The Bose Lifestyle Ultra Speaker is built for the modern wireless and streaming era, and it's competitively priced for the booming, crisp sound quality it delivers. It's also versatile, with a single speaker that can become two or part of a home theater setup as a rear or surround speaker. However, this is limited to the Bose ecosystem in that you won't be able to pair it with an audio solution from any other brand. That said, it's an effective solution on its own, with a single speaker delivering an absorbing listening experience in a small or large room. The proprietary Bose speaker and driver design might be a company secret, but the result speaks for itself.

Bose Lifestyle Ultra Speaker Review - Impressively Detailed Room-Filling Sound 7

If there are any drawbacks, it would come down to the design being a little too simple. Customizing the sound via the Bose app is limited, and outside of Bluetooth and WiFi, your physical connections are limited to a single 3.5 auxiliary input. That and the fact that even if you've got two Bose Lifestyle Ultra Speakers, you can't connect them to a TV or home theater system unless you've got the latest Bose soundbar. Outside of that, if streaming is your go-to for music, then you'll definitely be impressed by what the Bose Lifestyle Ultra Speaker can do with some of your favorite recordings.
