GTA 6 is marketing on Netflix to reach gamers who aren't locked in to buy on day 1, says insider

Jason Schreier suggests GTA 6's Netflix debut isn't really for hardcore fans, it's apparently aimed at reaching people who wouldn't buy the game day one.

TL;DR: Jason Schreier says GTA 6's Netflix gameplay premiere targets potential buyers who wouldn't watch YouTube/Twitch and haven't pre-ordered, not hardcore fans. Netflix may reach non-gamers, though most interested players already pre-ordered; Netflix could boost day-one sales or simply frustrate existing fans.

GTA 6's decision to debut new gameplay on Netflix instead of YouTube or Twitch has not gone over well with a lot of fans. However, now there's apparently a clearer explanation for why Rockstar and Take-Two made that call anyway.

Jason Schreier touched on the topic during a recent video on his YouTube channel, and when asked whether there's an audience on Netflix that wouldn't otherwise be watching GTA 6 gameplay, he said, "I do think there's a reasoning behind this." It's a fairly guarded answer, but it is also what Take-Two has apparently been signaling for a while now, that this isn't really aimed at people who already have their pre-orders locked in.

The backlash online has been pretty loud, though. A lot of longtime fans feel like paywalling a preview behind a Netflix subscription is a strange move for a game this anticipated, especially when Rockstar is already charging $80 for the standard edition and $100 for the Ultimate Edition. The extended look premieres on Netflix first on August 27, with a free version following six hours later on YouTube and Rockstar's own site, so it's not locked away forever, just delayed for anyone unwilling to pay up front.

Here's where it gets a little tricky though. GTA 6 is already about as culturally inescapable as a game can get, and its pre-order window has been open for a while now. It seems like at this point, nearly everyone who cares about gaming already knows the game exists, so the pool of undecided buyers Netflix could theoretically convert might genuinely be smaller than Take-Two is hoping for. Basically, almost everyone who wants to pre-order GTA 6 has already done so.

That said, Netflix's reach goes way beyond gaming circles. Millions of subscribers use it purely for shows and movies and never touch a controller, so there's probably a real audience there that simply wouldn't stumble across a gameplay reveal on YouTube or Twitch. Whether that translates into meaningful day-one sales is anyone's guess, but the logic isn't completely unreasonable on paper, even if it sounds odd at first.

It's worth remembering this is only one piece of GTA 6's wider marketing rollout, and Rockstar reportedly has more planned in the weeks ahead. It remains to be seen if Netflix genuinely pulls in new GTA 6 buyers or just annoys the fans who were always going to buy the game anyway. It feels like a coin flip that could pay off nicely for Rockstar, or one that ends up looking unnecessary in hindsight once the dust settles.
