UPDATE: Eurogamer has confirmed that the leaked PS4 Slim console is indeed genuine.
Sony's new cheaper PS4 Slim variant launches globally on September 14, according to purported early owners of the console.
Now one of the purported PS4 Slim owners told This Gen Gaming that the new smaller variant will launch worldwide on September 14, just a week after Sony's planned event on September 7. Sony is expected to unveil both the new 4K-ready PS4 Neo and the Slim model during this showcase. This could indicate the leaked system was provided by someone close to Sony, but be sure to take this with a grain of salt.
Of course we have no way of knowing if this information is true, and if the apparently leaked console is genuine or not. The supposed PS4 Slim looks real enough and comes in a very convincing box, but it still could just be a hoax nonetheless. We've seen people go through some pretty astounding effort to perpetrate hoaxes in the gaming world, and this could be yet another.
Then again, if it's real, we now have a good look at Sony's new PS4 Slim. The leaks show that the PS4 Slim has a disc drive despite its smaller stature, but it's not actually that much smaller than the vanilla PlayStation 4. It should be cheaper, though, and it might have a slight internal hardware refresh, but don't expect it to be anything close to the new PS4 Neo's possible 4K and 1080p 60FPS capabilities.
