A few weeks ago we reported on the long-awaited completion of a six-year decompilation project of the iconic Nintendo GameCube brawler, Super Smash Bros. Melee. This meant the code for Super Smash Bros. Melee could be converted and compiled into an unofficial but native PC port of the game. Turns out, we didn't have to wait long, as Melee Unlocked from Hero88go is exactly that.

This native Windows PC port of Super Smash Bros. Melee includes Slippi online play and support for unlocked frame rates and high-resolution play. Developer Hero88go confirms that the game's original PowerPC code was recompiled to C++ and runs on a D3D12 (DirectX 12) renderer. With the internal game logic that sticks to the original 60Hz presentation, additional frames are interpolated via the game's animation and physics data, with no added latency.

It also supports DLSS for Super Resolution, DLAA, Frame Generation, and NVIDIA Reflex. And even though it's listed as Version 0.6.1, the game also supports GameCube, DualSense, and Switch Pro controllers, HD texture packs, and online multiplayer compatible with Slippi netplay. And it doesn't stop there: the developer has added native support for NVIDIA's DLSS 5 3D-Guided Neural Rendering, which uses motion vectors and game data.

This feature is exclusive to GeForce RTX 50 Series owners, and based on the video above, it certainly adds a layer of realistic shadows and lighting to the game. Naturally, as we're talking about a GameCube game with Nintendo mascots fighting in vibrant arenas, DLSS 5's photorealism is pretty subtle here. It even detracts a little from the original presentation by giving the action a somewhat desaturated look. Still, it's impressive to see DLSS 5's native integration here, and it definitely makes the original 2001-era visuals look a little more modern.

Question #4

What are the system requirements for running Melee Unlocked with DLSS and DLSS 5 features?

Melee Unlocked is a native Windows PC port that runs on a D3D12 renderer, and it requires your own copy of Super Smash Bros. Melee, specifically the NTSC 1.02 version, to work. For the DLSS 5 3D-Guided Neural Rendering feature, the story says it is exclusive to GeForce RTX 50 Series owners. The DLSS 5 model file, nvngx_dlssnr.dll, is not included, so that also has to be sourced separately.

Melee Unlocked is available to download via GitHub, though players will need their own copy of Super Smash Bros. Melee (NTSC 1.02) for it to work. Also, the DLSS 5 model file (nvngx_dlssnr.dll) isn't included, so players will need to source that, too.
