Nintendo confirmed what fans had long speculated: the upcoming Star Fox title for the Switch 2 is a full remake of Star Fox 64.
Announced during a surprise Nintendo Direct event, the game retains the original N64 stage layouts but features a "complete visual overhaul," including fully voiced dialogue, detailed cutscenes, and an orchestral soundtrack.
Set for release on June 25, the remake marks the first new Star Fox title in a decade, and the first true sequel since Star Fox Zero on the Wii U. The new version introduces a prologue mission featuring Fox McCloud's father, expanded cinematic cutscenes, Challenge Mode, and online 4-vs-4 multiplayer battles.

It also supports co-op gunner controls and GameShare, allowing up to four players to join locally or online. Mouse support and AR filters for GameChat add modern quality-of-life features that gamers have come to expect.
The return of Star Fox 64 is more than nostalgia; it's a calculated move by Nintendo to leverage the Switch 2's improved hardware and online capabilities to breathe new life into one of Nintendo's most iconic characters, especially among longtime fans who have been enjoying Nintendo games and systems since the company broke into the gaming market.
The Star Fox franchise has been dormant for years, with the last true sequel dating back to 2014. With Fox McCloud already appearing in a major role in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the remake could reestablish him as a central Nintendo character.
For longtime fans and new players, this is a chance to revisit one of the first 3D rail shooters in a fresh, next-gen package.
