As promised a month ago, Microsoft's so-called "Xbox Mode" is now rolling out on more Windows 11 PCs, potentially giving users a look at what's on the horizon with the next-gen Project Helix system.

The final form of the Xbox brand is almost here. Project Helix represents a plan that's been more than a decade in the making; unifying Windows and Xbox consoles is something that happened first during the Xbox One era, and now Microsoft is pushing things to a new level with Project Helix, a device that can play both Windows PC and Xbox console games.
To ease into this convergence, Microsoft released the Xbox Full Screen Experience (FSE), which was basically a dedicated, console-like UI made specifically for gaming on Windows. The FSE, which was first launched on the Xbox Ally handhelds, is now called Xbox Mode and is coming to all Windows 11 devices.
In the Xbox Wire post, Microsoft also laid out a thoughtful message to fans that underlines the main ethos of Project Helix: Synergy.
"Xbox mode is another step in our broader work to make Xbox feel consistent across screens while giving you more choice in how and where you play.
"Windows has long been an important part of the PC gaming ecosystem, supporting innovation through its open platform. Together with Windows, Xbox is taking everything we've learned about building a world-class operating system for gaming and continuing to evolve the experiences that meet players where and how they choose to play."
As for Project Helix, Microsoft has said that the console will be very premium, that it will be a first-party device that's made internally under the Xbox brand, and that the device will of course be restricted by the ongoing RAM shortages.
At GDC 2026, Microsoft divulged key details about Project Helix, confirming that the system is powered by a customized SoC with AI built right into the silicon. Helix's chip aims to significantly improve storage workflow efficiencies with deep texture compression, as well as offering deeper levels of CPU and GPU optimizations, giving developers more power and overhead to utilize for more demanding games.
Project Helix will enter alpha testing in 2027, Microsoft has confirmed.
