TL;DR: Circana survey data shows cost is an increasingly common reason for canceling game subscriptions: 40% of Xbox Game Pass Essential and PS Plus Essential cancellations cite price (up from 37%), and 50% of Nintendo Switch Online cancellations cite price (up from 40%), even though overall cancellation rates aren't reported.

Video game subscription services once sold themselves as the smarter way to play. Spend less than the price of a single $70 game and get access to hundreds of titles. That pitch is getting harder to make.

New survey data shows that when people cancel services like Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus, and Nintendo Switch Online, price is increasingly the reason, even when they otherwise like what they're paying for.

The data comes from Circana's Future of Insights for Video Games Consumer Survey, shared by the firm's senior director and video game analyst Mat Piscatella. "Cost is becoming a stronger driver of US cancellations to Xbox Game Pass Essential, PS Plus Essential and Nintendo Switch Online," Piscatella wrote on Bluesky. "Over 40% of those cancelling in the US cite cost as a primary driver, higher than seen in Q1."

For Xbox Game Pass Essential and PS Plus Essential, 40% of people who cancelled cited cost as their reason, up from 37% in the first quarter of the year. Nintendo Switch Online saw a sharper jump, with 50% of cancellers now blaming price, up from 40% earlier in the year. That's a notable shift given Switch Online is by far the cheapest of the three, at $19.99 a year compared to roughly $9.99 a month for Game Pass Essential or PS Plus Essential individually.

"I'm expecting comments that read this as 41% of subscribers cancelling their subscription. That's obviously not what this is," he said. The survey doesn't suggest more people are cancelling subscriptions overall. It only shows that among those who do cancel, price is edging out other complaints, such as a weak game selection, as the stated reason.

The trend lines up with a rough year for subscription pricing. Microsoft raised Game Pass Ultimate from $19.99 to $29.99 late last year before rolling it back to $22.99 in April 2026, while also removing day-one Call of Duty access from the tier. Sony raised PlayStation Plus pricing for new subscribers earlier this year, citing general market conditions. Nintendo Switch Online has largely held its price steady in most regions, making its rising cancellation-by-cost figure harder to explain.

Along with subscription prices, console and game prices have both climbed this year, with vague "market conditions" language often pointing back to AI-driven memory shortages pushing component costs higher across the hardware industry.
