Sony-owned Columbia Pictures has ordered a feature-length film based on Hideo Kojima's and Konami's legendary Metal Gear Solid franchise.

With the latest gaming mega-hit adaptation, Super Mario Galaxy, nearing $400 million in gross box office ticket sales, other entertainment groups are looking to get in on the action. New reports indicate that Sony's Columbia Pictures is making a movie based on Metal Gear Solid, which in turn is a video game series that's heavily influenced by action films from the 1980s and 1990s.
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Final Destination Bloodlines' Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein will direct the Metal Gear film under their production company, Wonderlab.
"Zach and Adam are thrilling storytellers, masters of visuals and suspense, and two of the most impressive director/producers working today," Sony Pictures' Motion Picture Group President Sanford Panitch tells THR.
"With projects across all the company's film labels, we are so happy to create a home for them, and proud to have them as part of the Sony family."
The directors had this to say about the iconic franchise:
"Metal Gear Solid was nothing short of a groundbreaking cinematic masterpiece that forever revolutionized video games. We are thrilled and honored to bring Hideo Kojima's iconic characters and unforgettable world to life."
This isn't the first time Sony Pictures has advanced a Metal Gear film. Back in 2020, Deadline reported that a Metal Gear Solid movie was in the works with Kong: Skull Island's Jordan Vogt-Roberts attached to direct the adaptation. It was also said that Oscar Isaac might play the role of Snake in the film.
Metal Gear is one of the best-selling video game series with over 65 million copies purchased since the first game was released way back in 1987 on the original Nintendo Entertainment System.
Progression-wise, the franchise has been in a somewhat limbo state since the last mainline game, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, released in 2015. Since then, Konami has released a remastered version of MGS3 Snake Eater for modern consoles and PC, which helped revive sales for the aging brand.
