TL;DR: The Nintendo Switch 2 set a US record by selling 1.6 million units in June 2025, becoming the fastest-selling video game hardware at launch and driving a 249% year-over-year increase in June hardware spending to $978 million. It outperformed PlayStation 4's launch and led June sales in units and revenue.

Nintendo's new Switch 2 console is a big hit in the US, where it became the fastest-selling system of all time, beating out consoles like the PlayStation 4 at launch.

The Switch 2 has sold 1.6 million units in the US during the launch month of June, making it the fastest-selling video games hardware in United States history. The news comes from Circana executive director Mat Piscatella in a lengthy post on the US games market's performance throughout June 2025.

"Nintendo Switch 2 debuted as the fastest-selling video game hardware device in US history, while consumer spending in both video game hardware and accessories reached new all-time June records," Piscatella said in an analysis post on Bluesky.

Nintendo helped supercharge hardware spending in the US by nearly 250% year-over-year to nearly $1 billion. This represents an all-time record for hardware spending in the month of June.

As per Piscatella's report:

  • "Nintendo Switch 2 sold 1.6M units in June, the highest launch month unit sales for video game hardware in US history. The previous high was the 1.1M units of PlayStation 4 sold during November 2013."
  • "June hardware spending increased by 249% when compared to a year ago, to $978M. This is a record high for hardware spending in a June month, surpassing the $608M reached in June 2008."
  • "Nintendo Switch 2 was June's best-selling video game hardware in both units and dollars, while PlayStation 5 remained the best-seller year-to-date across both measures."

In a recent interview with IGN, Piscatella shares more insights on the Switch 2's launch, saying that it's still too early to tell how strong demand will be throughout the year and whether or not the Switch 2 will maintain a steady pace of sales.

"What the launch sales of Switch 2 primarily tell us is that they made a lot of Switch 2 to sell at launch.

"Lifetime sales and launch sales of a console often do not correlate, meaning that some consoles with small launches ended up doing incredibly well lifetime (PS2 only sold 400k in its launch month) while others with big launches ended up not doing as well lifetime.

"Since launch month demand is rarely satiated by available supply (and it is certainly not a great sign when it is, historically) all we can really get a read on at launch is the confidence of the manufacturer to make so many units available, and the ability of the supply chain to get those units into the market.

"But having the biggest launch month sales for any new video game hardware platform is a hell of a good start."
