The Nintendo Switch 2 is outselling the original Switch by nearly 3:1 in Japan, according to the latest reports from Famitsu.

The Switch 2 is setting new sales records across the globe. The console managed to sell over 1.5 million units in Japan, becoming the fastest-selling games hardware of all time in the region. The figure comes by way of Yomiuri, a Japanese newspaper that cites data from Famitsu Magazine, and relates to shipments and sell-in versus direct consumer purchases.
As Bloomberg's Gearoid Reidy notes, this sales blitz means the Switch 2 has outsold the Switch by threefold in Japan at launch. Demand for the system was fierce in Japan; over 2.2 million Japanese gamers signed up to the digital lottery for a chance to buy a Switch 2.

This isn't the only milestone that the Switch 2 has set; the console saw similar widespread popularity in North America.
The Switch 2 was also the fastest-selling video games hardware of all time in the United States. According to new data from Circana executive director Mat Piscatella, the Switch 2 sold over 1.6 million units in its first month of availability in June, beating out the PS4's original record.
These two reports also indicate that total first-month Switch 2 launch shipments are now over at least 3.1 million worldwide. This number was achieved in a month's time and only includes sales data from the United States and Japan.
For reference, Nintendo's own shipment forecast is 15 million Switch 2 consoles shipped in 10 months. Analysts believe that Nintendo's estimate is conservative.
The company will announce its Q1 results, including Switch 2 sales, on August 1, 2025.
