TL;DR: Techland's free Dying Light Retouched update, releasing June 26, 2025, enhances the 10-year-old game with improved 8K shadows, lighting, textures, and physics-based rendering. This manual, platform-specific visual boost optimizes the original experience without a full remaster, available on PS4, PS5, Xbox, and PC.

Techland's new Dying Light Retouched update will be out on all platforms on June 26, complete with visual boosts and more.

The Dying Light franchise turned 10 years old this year, and to celebrate, the developers over at Techland put together some extra bonuses for their community. One big addition is Dying Light Retouched, a new game patch that adds a higher level of detail to the last-gen classic.

The free Retouched update isn't a remaster, but Techland did say it was a significant amount of manual work to make the adjustments. These enhancements include 8K Ultra shadow quality, tweaked lighting, boosting LOD from 260% to 340%, increased texture quality, and improved physics-based rendering.

"The Retouched Update is about squeezing out even more from the Dying Light you already love. It's not a complete overhaul or remaster."

The studio also clarified that the changes will vary by platform, which makes sense, because Retouched will obviously look different on a PlayStation 4 than it would, say, on a PlayStation 5. The PC requirements also remain the same.

"Over the past couple of years, we've added a lot, customized a lot, and learned how to squeeze more from the tech we already have. One day, someone just started applying those learnings to some old assets - and it just clicked that we could do that across the whole game," Technical Game Director Grzegorz Åšwistowski said.

"It was a lot of manual work - but increasing the texture resolution or quality can have a huge impact on how the environment appears on screen," lead 3D artist Krzysztof Knefel said.

"I basically walked through the entire map, looking for assets to be improved. And all of those had to be changed manually by our artists."

Dying Light Retouched will launch on June 26, 2025 on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC as a free update.
