It's happening: Gears of War is coming to PlayStation. Today, Microsoft and Sony announced Gears of War: Reloaded, a new remaster of the 2006 original third-person shooter. Gears Reloaded is coming August 26, 2025 and will be sold for $39.99 on a veritable laundry list of platforms, including PlayStation 5.

The Gears franchise helped establish the Xbox brand during the platform-defining Xbox 360 era, and was a premiere Xbox exclusive series of games for nearly 20 years. Gears breaking platform exclusivity isn't exactly a surprise, as Xbox CEO Phil Spencer has said that no first-party games are off limits for cross-overs. The plan has apparently worked quite well, with Xbox earnings rising and first-party Xbox games topping PlayStation's charts.
