Google has found a surprisingly well-qualified celebrity for its latest hardware push. In a post on the official Google blog, the company announced that actor Henry Cavill is partnering with Google to build a video game for Googlebooks, its new line of Gemini-powered laptops.
Menaka Shroff, Google's VP of Marketing for the Global Android Ecosystem, wrote that Google wanted "a partner who understands the power of great technology to unlock creativity and bring ideas to life," and chose Cavill, described in the post as an "actor, producer, and tech enthusiast."
Popular Now: G.Skill replaces a $150 RAM kit now selling for $1,199, earning a customer for life in the processUnlike most tech collaborations with celebrity faces, this one actually makes sense. Cavill's been a well-documented gamer for years, talking openly about missing the call offering him the Superman role in Man of Steel because he was mid-raid in World of Warcraft.

He's also said he puts in countless hours a day on Total War: Warhammer III, and he's executive producing Amazon's long-in-development Warhammer 40,000 live-action series, a project he's been tied to since 2022, mainly because he is obsessed with the tabletop franchise. If any actor was meant to build a game for a marketing stunt, The Witcher star's resume makes him the most reasonable pick.
It's important to be clear that this is a marketing campaign for Google's new laptop line, not a studio announcement. Google opened preorders for its first Googlebook lineup on September 21, with five models starting at $899 and launching at US retail on October 4. Cavill's project is set to be revealed in November, so expect more details as we get closer to year's end.

Unfortunately, Google's blog post discusses no details on genre, platform, team size, or whether Cavill is doing any worthwhile creative work besides narrating a Google-produced video. The game has likely been in the works for a while, but we're still in the dark about any other tangible details.
