The Nintendo Switch 2 is pegged to be the biggest console launch ever, and representative of that statement is the fact that Switch 2 preorders are now sold out across major US retailers.
Analysts have predicted Nintendo is going to be able to produce anywhere between 6 and 8 million Switch 2 units before the release date of June 5 arrives, and at the moment, more than 2.2 million people have already pre-ordered the console in Japan, and 6 million have pre-ordered it globally.
Pre-orders have reached such a point in Japan that Nintendo had to make a formal announcement, preemptively apologizing for not being able to fulfill pre-orders of its upcoming console.
As for the US, it appears that the same fever-pitch anticipation is taking place, with Walmart, Best Buy, Target, and now GameStop all claiming they have sold out of their inventory. Preorders have now closed across the four major retailers, and it remains unclear when they will reopen.
Those interested in buying a Nintendo Switch 2 will now have to purchase one directly through Nintendo, but there are some requirements to be able to check out. Nintendo requires a buyer to have an active Nintendo Switch Online membership for 12 months and at least 50 hours of gameplay on the original Switch as of April 2nd, 2025.
