TL;DR: Switch 2's game slate is relatively thin, but that won't matter as much until 6 months after launch--then Nintendo will be facing the holiday season and needs to have more software at the ready.

The Switch 2 launches next month with over 20 new games and backwards compatibility support for thousands of Switch 1 games, and the summertime June launch gives Nintendo plenty of time to prepare more games for the critical holiday season.

Analysts expect the Switch 2 to sell up to 8 million units at launch, breaking all previous sales records and making it the biggest console launch in history. The usual mix of games, services, and gimmicks will drive this adoption and some analysts aren't particularly worried about the Switch 2's relatively thin slate of new games.

In a recent interview with GamesRadar, Circana analyst Mat Piscatella shares insights on the Switch 2's debut slate of games and why the selection isn't as important as, say, 6 months down the line when the holidays roll around.

"I think the thing with this is that you have such an enthusiastic, dedicated audience that I don't think the launch lineup matters at all," Piscatella said in the interview.

"What matters, I think, is the lineup as it looks six months in, when you have to start really trying to go after the more mass market or console enthusiast buyer, not just the Nintendo dedicated fan, because that person is going to buy this thing no matter what.

"So yeah, it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter for the first few months. It will matter in holiday. I'm much more concerned about what that holiday slate looks like, which we don't really know yet."
