Modders keep finding new ways to push hardware beyond manufacturer limits. Now, a new tool called NvpwrControl is reportedly targeting NVIDIA's RTX 50-series laptop GPUs, allowing higher power targets to be configured without a VBIOS modification.
According to the developer, NvpwrControl can expose power targets of up to 180W for the RTX 5070 Ti Laptop GPU and up to 225W for the RTX 5090 Laptop GPU. The developer says this was achieved by reverse-engineering NVIDIA's power-policy stack, effectively getting beneath the OEM maximum exposed to conventional tuning software like MSI Afterburner.
Notably, this isn't a VBIOS flash and was developed against NVIDIA driver 616.92. Changes by NVIDIA may affect compatibility with other driver versions, and this tool is experimental, so not all functionality may work as expected.
The latest release, NvpwrControl v1.8.0, is an experimental tuning utility offering controls for power limits, core and memory clocks, monitoring, and recovery. It supports multiple RTX 50-series laptop GPUs, with the RTX 5050, 5060, and 5070 listed at up to 140W, the RTX 5070 Ti at up to 180W, and the RTX 5080 and 5090 at up to 225W. Certain compatible systems may expose up to 250W after passing the software's hardware and power-policy checks.

This isn't the first time an RTX 50-series laptop GPU has been pushed beyond its factory power limits. In mid 2025, we covered an RTX 5090 Laptop GPU that was shunt-modded from 175W to 250W, requiring physical changes to the GPU's PCB.
The mod also comes with a major caveat users should know before trying it. The creator explicitly states on GitHub that Windows Driver Signature Enforcement must be disabled to load the tool's unsigned driver.

Disabling Windows Driver Signature Enforcement removes one of the operating system's safeguards against untrusted kernel drivers, and NvpwrControl remains an independent, experimental project. Likewise, while the research is public, the source code has not been released, with only compiled binaries available in the GitHub repository.
