AMD's 12 and 16-core Ryzen mobile CPUs could get new versions that make gaming laptops cheaper

Fiery top-end Dragon Range CPUs could get new spins that make powerful gaming laptops a bit more affordable, or that's the hope anyway.

AMD might have a couple of fresh top-end Ryzen processors for laptops inbound which will sit just under the current Dragon Range top dogs.

The rumor, which comes from Golden Pig Upgrade, a regular leaker on Bilibili - a source that must be treated with some caution (though any rumor should be, really) - claims Ryzen 9 7840HX and Ryzen 9 7940HX CPUs are incoming.

Those processors will sit under the current Ryzen 9 7845HX and Ryzen 9 7945HX mobile chips, carrying the same spec, but with one change: The clock frequencies will be adjusted down slightly.

That won't make a huge difference to these spins on the 16-core and 12-core CPUs, but what will obviously also happen is they'll be a bit cheaper than their current counterparts.

In short, top-end gaming laptops could get a touch of extra affordability courtesy of the new chips (assuming notebook makers pass on bill of material savings to the consumer, naturally).

If these Ryzen 9 7840HX and Ryzen 9 7940HX models are real, they may tip up soon, perhaps quickly enough to provide some new gaming notebooks with more palatable price tags (relatively speaking) in time for the Holiday season.

The main worry is what sort of quantity we might see these new processors in, and whether AMD can muster enough production to ensure that more than a scattering of laptops can benefit from the CPUs. Fingers crossed, as ever, for solid enough availability, as it's always a little galling to have good products that are thin on the ground.
