It's officially happening: the old-school 90s classic is getting reborn on the Switch 2.

Nintendo today announced an official remake of The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time for its upgraded Switch 2 console. The game was revealed at today's Nintendo Direct and is planned for a launch in 2026, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the franchise.
Only a short glimpse of prologue cinematic footage was shown, but we did get our first look at Link, and the visuals are just incredible compared to the original game--there's even light reflecting in Link's hair. No exact details or information has been revealed so far and Nintendo plans to unveil more in the coming months.
The only snippet of info that Nintendo offers for the remake is quite concise: "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time will be reborn on Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026."
This game was rumored to be in development as a way to celebrate Zelda's big 40th anniversary in a way that doesn't require a mainline AAA release. The Ocarina of Time remake will catalyze sales on the Switch 2 and help keep up the franchise while the group works on the next big chapter.
What's interesting is that there's not a date attached to this project yet. The first Ocarina of Time was released on the Nintendo 64 in Japan and America in November 1998, and if the company wants to really be authentic, it's possible that the OoT remake could drop in November as well...potentially putting it up against Grand Theft Auto 6, which launches on non-Nintendo devices on November 19.
