Following leaks and rumors, 4A Games has officially announced the existence of Metro 2039 and confirmed a premiere date for their new mainline sequel.

It's been no secret that a new Metro game is in development--we've known about the project for over half a decade, but 4A Games has been markedly silent about the new game...until now. The studio today revealed that Metro 2039 will be the next game in the series, with a big unveiling on April 16, 2026 at 10AM PST, 7PM CEST, 8PM EST during an Xbox showcase.
The developers have also launched a Metro 2039 website with newsletter sign-ups and promos, including an early giveaway that could secure a free copy of the game.
No details were highlighted today and the confirmation might be a quick response from the studio to get ahead of recent leaks about the game, which saw insider Nate The Hate spoiling the surprise on Twitter.
Embracer Group, who owns 4A Games and publisher Plaion/Deep Silver, hasn't been coy about the existence of the Metro game. It's just we didn't know exactly what form it would take until the studio confirmed the news.
In a February 2026 earnings call, Embracer CEO Lars Wingefors said that the company's FY27 timeline (March 2026 - April 2027) would see the release of "one long-awaited, major, in-house developed and in-house published title."
As a Ukrainian game dev, 4A Games has said that it will use its experiences during the brutal and chaotic Ukrainian War as inspiration for parts of Metro 2039's storyline and events.
The scope of the game hasn't been revealed, but in 2020, it was said that Saber Interactive and 4A Games were co-developing a new multiplayer game set in the Metro series. The new game is set 4 years after the events of Metro Exodus, and it's possible that Metro 2039 will introduce multiplayer to the franchise for the first time.
