AMD's next-generation Zen 7 processors will be coming to the current AM5 socket according to new leaks, with 32 cores and 64 threads being on offer with flagship Zen 7 chips in the future... all on AM5.
In a new video from Moore's Law is Dead, the leaker says that over the last couple of weeks he's been hearing more information and seeing more documentation regarding AMD's next-gen Zen 7 CPUs on the current AM5 socket. This has been a "recent decision" over at AMD, with plans changing recently that would see 32C/64T chips based on the future-gen Zen 7 architecture on AM5.
AMD committed to the AM5 socket lasting until 2025 and beyond back in December 2023, with Zen 3, Zen 4, and the current-gen Zen 5 processors all launched on AM5. AMD's next-gen Zen 6 processors will be released in 2026, also on AM5, while Zen 7 should be released in 2028, with these leaks suggesting Zen 7 is also on AM5.
If the rumors are true and we see Zen 7 on AM5, it will be one of the longest CPU socket supports we've seen, and lines up with recent rumors that Intel's next-gen LGA 1954 socket will be around for at least 3-4 generations of Intel CPUs. But, AM5 is here, right now, so anyone that owns something like a Zen 3-based CPU could upgrade to Zen 5, Zen 6, or eventually, Zen 7.
It also means that we'll see the AM5 socket supporting up to a monster 32 cores and 64 threads, as next-gen Zen 7 processors will feature 16 cores per chiplet (dual chiplet = 32 cores total). 32C/64T processors of the future, slotting into an older AM5 motherboard is a great position for AMD to be in, providing as much longevity in AM5 is possible for its consumers.
AMD's next-gen Zen 6 "Olympic Ridge" CPUs will have an improved IO die with higher-end RAM speed support and more, another big upgrade as Zen 5 uses the same IO die as Zen 4. Zen 7 will have the higher-end IO die from Zen 6, providing multiple benefits (more cores, higher clock speeds, improved IO die, connectivity, RAM speeds) with the upgrade from -- let's say Zen 3/4 or Zen 5 -- to a Zen 7 chip on an AM5 motherboard.
