Crimson Desert, a sprawling open world RPG that many gamers are keenly looking forward to, has officially been delayed - and will no longer arrive this year.
At the end of last year, the release window was announced as late 2025 (see the trailer above), but as Gematsu reports, we've been told that the launch date has been pushed back to Q1 2026.
The disappointing news was shared as part of an earnings call, with a statement provided by Pearl Abyss before the usual Q&A session (that followed the fiscal results).
The publisher said:
"The launch of Crimson Desert, our first large-scale AAA console game, has been unavoidably delayed by one quarter, from the previously announced schedule. This is due to longer than expected timelines arising from schedule coordination and collaborations with multiple partners for offline distribution, voice-overs, console certification, and other launch preparations."
The company added:
"We sincerely apologize for not being able to meet the originally promised fourth quarter [2025] launch schedule. Please kindly understand that this is a strategic decision aimed at insuring success on a meaningful scale."
The immediate reaction has been some mild-to-moderate frustration, but as ever with these delays, plenty of gamers are wise enough to realize that it's better that a title gets the attention it needs, rather than being rushed out the door.
There's also been some concern about how this shift in the release timeframe might see Crimson Desert face the threat of launch interference from GTA 6. The danger here, of course, is that we might see Crimson Desert slide further than Q1 of next year - and that might then leave it perilously near GTA 6 which is another big-name game that's been delayed from 2025 (to May 2026, as you'll doubtless recall).
Okay, so it isn't like people can't buy more than one game in a short space of time, but the risk is that while Crimson Desert has drummed up a good deal of anticipation and hype in general, it would clearly be overshadowed by the next instalment in the Grand Theft Auto franchise, should it land anywhere near GTA 6.
A further concern to consider here is that this is one of those games that has been delayed before. Indeed, you may recall that a late in 2021 timeframe was originally announced for the release of Crimson Desert.
Overly ambitious?
Crimson Desert is launching on consoles - PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S - alongside PC (and Mac), and another key question is whether it can live up to the hype, as it's a huge and ambitious open world affair. Have the devs overstretched in that respect?
While the game looks stunning, and is seemingly huge in scope as mentioned, there are definite worries about whether the combat will be up to scratch in particular. Gamers who managed to get a chance to play the brief demo last year (at Gamescom) certainly raised a fair few flags about the combat being rather wonky and unsatisfying - so maybe honing that side of the game might be part of the delay.
That's pure speculation of course, but again, we come back to the importance of getting the game right, rather than getting it out. And if Crimson Desert slides further, it may even be headed to later in 2026 (keeping it out of the way of GTA 6).
