GTA 6 developers didn't even believe the 2025 release date was real

Rockstar Games has officially delayed the release of Grand Theft Auto VI, and now we are hearing that even the developers at the studio didn't believe the game was going to release in its original release window of Fall 2025.

In a recent post on Bluesky, Bloomberg's Jason Schreier revealed that Rockstar's official delay isn't shocking even for developers at the company. The reporter said that no one he has spoken to at Rockstar has believed that Fall 2025 was a "real window for a very long time now." The reason? Simply, too much work, not enough time, and a "real desire from management to avoid brutal crunch." The Bloomberg reporter goes on to write that GTA 6's delay has "seemed inevitable for months if not longer."

The official delay of GTA 6 to May 26, 2026, has been followed by a statement by Rockstar Games' publisher Take-Two Interactive, which Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Take-Two said in a recent statement that the publisher "fully supports" Rockstar's decision to delay the release to fulfill it's creative vision for GTA 6.

Notably, GTA 6 has been in development for more than 10 years, and despite this massive amount of time, it appears that fulfilling the scope of the game was underestimated by Rockstar, with the real question now being how long Rockstar has known they weren't going to hit the release window of Fall 2025.

While that may seem like a question we will never get an answer for - that might not be the case as Take-Two Interactive is set to report their FY 2025 earnings and FY 2026 forecast on May 15, where we may learn more information about the GTA 6 delay and the reasoning behind it.
