AI is everywhere you look in the tech space, and other spaces for that matter, so it didn't come as a surprise that the current administration held a 'Winning the AI Race' summit in Washington. With all the big players in the AI space attending and speaking at the event, including NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang, President Trump also took the time to discuss AI. Specifically, what he thought about the name.
It turns out that President Trump is a big fan of U.S. leadership in all things artificial intelligence, but he has one glaring issue that he'd like to have resolved. No, it's not news that NVIDIA and TSMC were planning on manufacturing the next generation of Vera Rubin chips in America. It's the name.
"Around the globe, everyone is talking about artificial intelligence," Trump said. "Artificial, I can't stand it. I don't even like the name. I don't like anything that's artificial, so could we straighten that out, please? We should change the name. I actually mean that."
He would go on to clarify that he doesn't like the word "artificial" as a name for anything, so it's got nothing to do with the technology driving the current AI boom. He's so impressed with generative AI and companies like NVIDIA that he kind of put forward a suggestion. Genius Intelligence, or GI.
"I don't like the name artificial anything," Trump continued. "Because it's not artificial. It's genius. It's pure genius." Now, AI or artificial intelligence is also referred to as machine learning, so that's always an option.
Another option would be to heed the words of Arnold Schwarzenegger's Terminator in Terminator 2, and start calling all AIs 'learning computers.' And then we can also rename GPUs to 'neural-net processors,' which sounds pretty cool when said with an Austrian accent. As a big fan of the iconic Terminator 2: Judgment Day film, "I actually mean that."
Outside of changing the name, President Trump also announced an "AI action plan" that he said will turn the United States into an AI-export "powerhouse." This includes an executive order that will mandate that any AI models developed with the aid of federal funding need to be anti-woke and free from "ideological dogmas such as DEI." If you're wondering what that has to do with exporting, the action plan also included deregulation and expediting permits for new power-hungry data centers.
