TL;DR: The Outer Worlds 2 draws heavy inspiration from Fallout: New Vegas, with Obsidian aiming to recreate that infamous early-game feeling —on top of revamped combat and expanded player builds.

With The Outer Worlds 2 pushing towards its 2025 release window, Obsidian sat down to discuss some of the memorable experiences the game seeks to create. Particularly, drawing parallel to infamous moments from the opening of Fallout New Vegas.

Speaking with IGN, Obsidian's lead systems designer, Kyle Kanig discussed how the combat has been updated to feel more modern, drawing on some familiar titles for inspiration.

"From the very beginning we knew we wanted to step up that weapon feel and moment to moment gunplay so we looked at other games like Destiny, Call of Duty Modern Warfare..." he said.

However, as an open-world RPG, it's only natural that the studio would draw on its most famous works. Specifically, the weird and wild wasteland of Fallout: New Vegas.

"Even something as simple as the pacing of the different points of interest around the world-and how often you run into things - took a lot of inspiration from Fallout: New Vegas," game director Brendon Adler commented:

One famous example Kanig mentioned is the notorious area north of Goodsprings at the start of New Vegas, where new players would often charge out into the world - only to get wrecked by some of the game's deadliest enemies. Moments like this, the studio has been determined to recreate in The Outer Worlds 2.

"Looking back at some of our older games [like New Vegas] something we really wanted to hit on again was that feeling of leaving Good Springs, heading north to Death Claws and Kazadors and just getting bullied." Kanig said.

Player choice, reactivity, and diverse playstyles were a huge part of what made New Vegas memorable. The Outer Worlds 2 is following suit, doubling down on build variety, skill systems, and ways to shape your own experience.

"We're looking for ways to incentivize the player to experiment with different builds, either traditional or non-traditional."

While The Outer Worlds 2 does not currently have a release date, players will be able to get their hands on the game when it releases later this year.
