Forgot Oblivion, a Fallout 3 remaster is seemingly still inbound, but it won't arrive for a while - though Tale of Two Wastelands could be a decent stopgap.

TL;DR: With the Oblivion remake all but confirmed, the other rumored remaster of Fallout 3 that was leaked during Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard is seemingly still on the table. However, we're told it will be "a while" before we see the revamped version of Fallout 3. Those who can't wait might want to give the Tale of Two Wastelands total conversion a shot, which merges the worlds of Fallout 3 and New Vegas.

If you're excited about the Oblivion remake, well, that's so yesterday now - it's time to get excited about the Fallout 3 remaster instead.

Cast your mind back a long way, to two years ago, in fact, when there was that major leak during Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard, from which the existence of the Oblivion and Fallout 3 remasters was revealed.

Well, the chatter around the Oblivion remake recently grew to deafening levels - it now seems all but officially confirmed, with leaked screenshots spilled from the developer - and following that, some fresh curiosity has been stoked around the Fallout 3 revamp.

It had to happen, and the question on the lips of many Bethesda fans is: do we have a Fallout 3 remaster coming as well? According to one of the more accurate sources in terms of the Oblivion remake, NateTheHate2 on X, a Fallout 3 project is indeed inbound.

The Gamer spotted that NateTheHate2 was asked whether the Fallout 3 remaster was still in the pipeline, and replied that it's "planned but won't be for a while," and they responded to another separate query that: "It'll be a while before we see it."

So, it is still on the table by all accounts, which is pretty cool, although clearly it's not anywhere near the horizon yet.

The Oblivion remake, on the other hand, is expected to emerge next week, with the plan being to shadow drop it after the Elder Scrolls Online anniversary event ends (which is on April 22).

Clearly, as far as Fallout 3 goes, these are only thin wisps of rumors right now - the faintest hints - but still, the fact that the revamp of Oblivion (visually, and with the gameplay too) is actually happening does weight the odds more in favor of this second remake outing from Bethesda. (And there have been rumors about it in the past, of course).

Tale of Two Wastelands

If you don't have much patience and absolutely can't wait for a Fallout 3 remaster, bear in mind that we've caught some buzz about how a Tale of Two Wastelands (known as TTW) is well worth a shot. It's a total conversion that merges Fallout 3 (plus DLC) into Fallout: New Vegas effectively giving you a remake of both.

A word of caution, though, as installing TTW is not for the faint hearted. As per advice gleaned from the TTW subreddit, the below YouTube video is an up to date and detailed guide on how to get this TC up and running.

So, if you're very much not in the mood for a long wait for the official Fallout 3 remaster, this is something to think about. Or you could just watch the clip and marvel at the apparent complexity of getting this little project going.
