TL;DR: Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Shadows has reached three million players in its first week, becoming one of the year's best-selling games. Despite financial issues, Ubisoft plans more releases, including Assassin's Creed Invictus, a multiplayer game set for 2025, and a remake of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag targeting 2026.

Ubisoft's long-awaited, controversial, and delayed Assassin's Creed Shadows is finally out in its first week of release and has reached three million players. It's one of the year's best-selling games, sitting behind Capcom's smash hit Monster Hunter Wilds. Even though Ubisoft still finds itself in financial trouble and is, by all accounts, spinning off key franchises like Assassin's Creed to fall under the direction of a new subsidiary - there's a lot more Creed coming.

Assassin's Creed Shadows is already a hit, with millions of players.

According to industry insider Tom Henderson, the mysterious Assassin's Creed multiplayer game that Ubisoft confirmed was in development back in 2022 is currently on track for a 2025 release. This makes it the second Assassin's Creed title, after Shadows, to drop this year. Called Assassin's Creed Invictus, the multiplayer take on the franchise will be more like Fall Guys or Smash Bros. than a traditional open-world action adventure.

The Fall Guys comparison is because players will compete in various rounds of varying activities, ranging from 'team deathmatch' style bouts to parkour speedrunning. The camera will be more zoomed out than we've seen before, and maps will take inspiration from classic franchise entries like Assassin's Creed II's Renaissance Italy - according to @xj0nathan over on X.

.

This extends to character, with franchise-favorite Ezio Auditore apparently in the game. Perhaps this is the Smash Bros. connection, stars, and side-characters from past and present Assassin's Creed games battling it out in arenas. The game will launch via Assassin's Creed 'Animus,' which debuted with Assassin's Creed Shadows - a hub that doubles as a launcher for jumping into various Creeds.

Assassin's Creed Invictus certainly sounds interesting. As a radical departure, we expect the art direction and visuals to be more colorful and "cartoony" than the realistic approach of the mainline releases. The next main game in the series is Assassin's Creed Hexe, which is set in 16th-century Europe and deals with darker themes and supernatural elements like witchcraft. Before then, a remake of the popular Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is set to debut on modern platforms, which is rumored to be targeting a 2026 release.
