Remedy Entertainment's contribution to gaming is well documented. Max Payne, Alan Wake, Control, Quantum Break, and now Control Resonant make a portfolio that, by any measure, should have the studio sitting comfortably. But critical acclaim and commercial success have not always aligned for Remedy.
Alan Wake 2 took over a year to turn a profit despite being a genuine Game of the Year contender, and that kind of outcome leaves a studio in a difficult position. Control Resonant needed to land differently, and so far, it has.
The game has become Remedy's most successful Steam launch on record, peaking at over 34,000 concurrent players and hitting first place on the Steam bestseller chart with an 88% positive review score. For context, the original Control peaked at around 9,100 concurrent players six years ago. Control Resonant has nearly quadrupled that figure.
Quantum Break, another Remedy release with a devoted following, maxed out at just 2,719 players on Steam. Before launch, the game had already accumulated over two million wishlist entries. At the time of writing, it has dropped to sixth in the bestsellers chart, but remaining in the top 10 after launch week is a strong sign.
The support has come from unexpected places as well. Rockstar Games posted on X to congratulate the launch, a notable gesture given that Rockstar is also funding and will eventually market Remedy's Max Payne 1 and 2 remakes, which have been in development for some time. Having one of the biggest names in the industry publicly back a studio in this position is exactly the kind of spotlight that helps.
Even the piracy community has taken a softer stance than usual. The game was cracked quickly after launch, but forums and subreddits dedicated to game piracy have seen an unusual number of posts encouraging users to actually buy Control Resonant if they can afford to. Fans have also openly rejected the cracked version in favour of supporting the studio. One Reddit user, rockey94, said: "For the love of god please buy this game and help keep the lights on for this one of a kind studio."
