Meta has introduced new disruptive technology that could have long-reaching effects on the entertainment industry. The company has revealed specifics on its new Horizon Create and Studio tech, a suite of software tools that use generative AI to instantly create playable games. The interactive slices can then be shared on Facebook and Instagram.

"Horizon Create and Horizon Studio put all your workflows in one place. No exporting, no importing, no switching apps, no separate pipelines. It's a place where you can play what others have built and start creating in the moment,"said Horizon VP Saxs Persson.

Horizon Create works a lot like EA's experimental real-time gen AI chatbot. Users type what they want to see in a familiar chatGPT-like interface and the tools will create something playable.

"You have an idea, you open the app, describe the game you want to build in your own words, and the system starts building it with you," Persson said.

Users can then continually refine and whittle away at the AI-generated game, making revisions like new items, new quests, etc.

"It's not a sketch, it's not a prototype, you build playable 2D and 3D games with real depth. From there, everything is one prompt away; reimagine the environment, change the characters, make a new quest or a new level, tweak the difficulty so new players can stay with it."

While all of this sounds interesting and transformative, it may be a long time before gen AI games take off. But should they have a magnetic social effect, Meta could very well displace and disrupt the games industry through its already-dominant Facebook social ecosystem.

According to the data, around 3 billion people use Facebook every month. But how many of them actually play games? Those numbers aren't published any more, but Meta has said in the past that over 250 million people played games on Facebook.

Decentralizing not only the tools to make games, but the ability to make money from them, could shake up the current games industry even more than it has already been.

Horizon: describe a game, build it your way, and publish it across Meta apps

Horizon Create and Horizon Studio are two new creation tools built on the agentic creation capabilities of the Meta Horizon Engine. Together, they enable you to describe the game you have in mind, shape it with guided controls, and work through it as a plan you build and revise: progression systems, difficulty, art direction and multiplayer are all yours to adjust.

Horizon Create: a mobile app for building and remixing games entirely from your phone. Prompt an idea, keep playing something else while it builds, then playtest when the notification arrives.

Horizon Studio: a web surface for tighter control over the details, pairing open-ended prompting with sliders, dropdowns and typed parameters, plus visual editing and asset swapping.
