If you've been following next-gen PC gaming GPU news this week, you've seen our coverage of the still-to-be-announced RDNA 5-powered Radeon RX 10000 Series cards and the RTX Rubin-powered GeForce RTX 60 Series; rumors and leaks have been coming in thick and fast. One rumor says the GeForce RTX 60 Series could arrive in the first half of 2027, but we've also seen conflicting reports that RDNA 5 and the RTX 60 Series have been delayed until 2028. That is, except for one new product.

According to well-known leaker Kepler_L2, who has a notable track record for accurate information, a single AMD GPU, codenamed AT2, is on track for 2027. AT2 is believed to be the mid-range RDNA 5 follow-up to the Radeon RX 9070 XT, which could end up being called the Radeon RX 10070 XT. As the only GPU in the RDNA 5 line-up for 2027 (and it could arrive in the first half of the year), this would mean the flagship and entry-level models won't be here until 2028, alongside the GeForce RTX 60 Series.

With a reported 40 CUs compared to the 64 CUs in the Radeon RX 9070 XT, if the 3nm (TSMC's N3P node) AT2 graphics card delivers a significant performance improvement over RDNA 4, it could be a game changer.
Or, at the very least, take the fight to GeForce RTX in a way that many fans have wanted to see for a while. If performance eclipses both the GeForce RTX 5070 Ti and the GeForce RTX 5080 (it's unlikely to hit RTX 5090 levels) while maintaining a relatively attractive sub-$1,000 price point, it would affect the value proposition of NVIDIA's enthusiast-class RTX 50 Series offerings. And with the long-rumored GeForce RTX 50 SUPER Series refresh reportedly no longer coming due to the memory crisis, NVIDIA's answer to the AT2 could be missing for several months, or even up to a year.

Beyond raw performance, RDNA 5 will reportedly beef up its path-tracing, AI, and Neural Rendering capabilities, which could also let AMD bring new tech to market before NVIDIA. Things like AI-powered texture compression and global illumination, alongside feature parity with DLSS 4.5 and the new DLSS 5. Of course, that would require these technologies to be in a mature state, with game support there on day one, something that AMD and Radeon have struggled with for several years.

Of course, even with a potential "GeForce RTX 5080 killer" that's more affordable, taking a big chunk out of NVIDIA's overwhelming market share and mindshare with GeForce RTX is still a tall ask. However, this could be the sort of real competition we haven't seen out of Team Red before - taking the lead when it comes to launching a brand-new GPU for PC gamers. If true, it will be exciting and interesting to see.
