GOG has confirmed that a native Linux version of its Galaxy launcher is officially in development. The news comes from joint CEO Krzysztof Papliński, who told GamingOnLinux that the company has hired a specialist for the project and is actively exploring the best approach to Linux support. No release timeline has been shared.

"Linux continues to be one of the topics we hear the most about from our community, and we really appreciate the passion and patience of everyone who's been asking about it," Papliński said. He further described the project as a significant undertaking, saying GOG is actively investing time and resources into Linux support but is not yet ready to share specific plans or a release timeline.

The specialist position was first advertised in January 2026, when GOG described Linux as its "next major frontier" and sought a senior engineer to rethink Galaxy's architecture and tooling for the platform. Hiring that engineer appears to have been the first major step toward making a Linux version a reality.

GOG already lets users download supported Linux games through its web storefront, but Galaxy itself remains exclusive to Windows and macOS. As a result, Linux users either download games manually or rely on third-party launchers such as Heroic Games Launcher and Lutris. While those alternatives work, they lack several of Galaxy's core features, including playtime and achievement tracking, cloud saves, automatic updates, and a unified friends list spanning Steam, GOG, and Epic Games.

One of the biggest unanswered questions is how Galaxy will handle Windows-only games on Linux. While a native client can manage accounts, libraries, and downloads, running Windows titles would still require a compatibility layer such as Proton or Wine. GOG has not said which approach it intends to take, and that decision will likely determine how compelling the Linux version is for most users.
