As we have stated many times in the past, OTG (On-The-Go) drives are coming on strong in the last year or so. As smartphones and smart devices become an everyday part of our lives, the need to transfer data between our devices increases with this trend. With these devices becoming commonplace, it will only get harder to make a decision in choosing what drive fits your personality. With that said today, we add a high performance solution to the mix, with the Strontium Nitro Plus OTG.
The Strontium Nitro Plus OTG flash drive is available in capacities ranging from 16GB all the way up to the 64GB model which we have here today. Marketing specifications depict read performance up to 120 MB/s, while write is listed at 90 MB/s. With this drive having dual purpose capabilities, we have on one end a Type A USB 3.0 connector, with the other end a micro B USB, with the drive as a whole using a swivel design we have seen on a few drives in the past.
MSRP of the Strontium Nitro Plus for Android in the 64GB capacity is set at $39.99 and features a five-year warranty.
Packaging for the Nitro Plus OTG lists capacity in bold print at the top right with the drive behind plastic in the center.
The back of the package lists features, along with a guide to data capacity below.
Above, we have the USB 3.0 connection show. As you can see, this drive carries a very small pico footprint.
Swapping the swivel around, we revealed the micro USB connection for Android smart devices. When in this mode, you can see the standard USB connection is protected by the center swivel mechanism.
The Strontium Nitro Plus OTG is factory formatted with the exFAT file system. Useable capacity after formatting is 60.4GB.
Starting off our testing, we connected the Strontium to our Windows test machine. As you can see in the chart above, read performance topped marketing number by a good margin coming in at 144 MB/s. Write performance, however, was quite a bit below the 90 MB/s prescribed; here we only reached 59 MB/s.
Over on our MacBook Pro, performance of the Strontium touched the same 140 MB/s for read, while write performance suffered even more reaching just 47 MB/s.
With the above performance and taking into account the price per GB, the Strontium was able to take top honors in our price/performance chart by a slight margin over the SanDisk solution.
In the past, we have seen quite a few products come through from Strontium. For the most part, they have always been some of the top performing solutions with an excellent price tag. The same can be said for this latest OTG solution as the drive carries a very low MSRP of $39.99 for a 64GB setup, certainly the lowest we have seen to date at this performance level.
Build quality is pretty solid; the metal shell that appears to be nickel plated does manage to grab every fingerprint within a ten foot range, but apart from that, we had no issues with either connector whether we were testing with our Windows, OS X or Android tablet.
Performance of the drive was quite good. We did manage to top marketing numbers for read performance both with our Windows and OS X test platforms. Write performance, however, did not live up to marketing expectations, but then again it wasn't too terribly slow as we did manage near 50 MB/s in our testing. Overall, the Strontium Nitro Plus OTG is a solid drive for those wanting OTG data storage and with several capacities to choose from there is surely a solution for all.
