TL;DR: Qualcomm is reportedly developing official Android GPU drivers and exploring DirectX 12 support for PC game emulation. A Geekerwan demo ran Cyberpunk 2077 and Black Myth: Wukong on an engineering device, but Qualcomm has not confirmed the plans, performance, supported devices, or release timing.

The mobile gaming community has long relied on unofficial tools to run PC games on Android phones, making it a gamble where some titles perform great while others refuse to launch. That struggle may be nearing an end, according to new details shared in a hands-on preview video from Chinese tech channel Geekerwan on Qualcomm's newly announced Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chip.

According to Geekerwan, a Qualcomm contact told the channel the company has shifted its focus to PC game emulation and is developing its own official GPU drivers to support it. So far, Android users translating Windows games to Qualcomm-powered phones have mostly relied on Turnip, a community-built driver project for Adreno GPUs that's produced strong results without any official backing from Qualcomm.

Geekerwan also claimed that Qualcomm is examining bringing DirectX 12 support more directly to Android. As part of the demonstration, the channel says it ran Cyberpunk 2077 and Black Myth: Wukong through DirectX 12 translation on a Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 reference device, with both titles reportedly running. No frame-rate or performance figures were declared for either test. Qualcomm's Windows-based Snapdragon PC platforms already support DirectX 12 natively, but this would be a new attempt to bring that support to Android.

However, this report still traces back to a secondhand comment relayed by a YouTuber, not an official statement, product page, or press release from Qualcomm. The company's September 22 announcement of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 covered mobile gaming features widely but did not mention DirectX 12 drivers for Android. Also, the device used in testing the two games was an internal engineering reference unit, not a finished product, and there's currently no confirmed release date, supported device list, or official driver name attached to any of this.

Frequently Asked Questions

Open a question for an answer from TweakTown's coverage of this news, or ask your own below.

Question #1

When does Qualcomm expect to release official GPU drivers for PC game emulation on Android?

Qualcomm has not announced a release date for official Android GPU drivers for PC game emulation. Their development was reported secondhand, and Qualcomm has not confirmed the drivers publicly.
Question #2

How might Qualcomm's official Adreno drivers differ from the community-built Turnip project?

Turnip is a community-built Adreno driver project that Android users have used to run translated Windows games without Qualcomm's official backing. Qualcomm's reported drivers would be developed by the company itself for PC game emulation on Android, and Qualcomm is also said to be examining more direct DirectX 12 support. Qualcomm has not confirmed the drivers or announced when they might be released, so it is not yet clear how they would compare with Turnip in performance or game compatibility.
Question #3

How does Qualcomm's native DirectX 12 support on Windows Snapdragon PCs relate to its Android effort?

Qualcomm's Windows-based Snapdragon PCs already support DirectX 12 natively. Bringing DirectX 12 support more directly to Android would be a separate, new effort, and for now it is an unconfirmed claim relayed by Geekerwan rather than an official Qualcomm announcement.

Have a question that isn't listed here? Ask below, and TweakBot will answer it.

Qualcomm has heavily invested in gaming credentials with this chip generation, including a claimed 44% jump in raw GPU performance over its predecessor, so moving further into PC emulation support would line up with that broader push. Still, until Qualcomm confirms these claims directly, it's better to consider official Android GPU drivers for PC gaming as an optimistic rumor rather than a settled matter.
