The Bottom Line

In the last month or so, we have seen an increase in the amount of USB 3.0 SSDs being released in the market. Included in this list as of today is the latest from Patriot Memory in the form of the Supersonic Phoenix.
The Supersonic Phoenix is a portable solution about the size of a credit card with marketing numbers dictating 260 MB/s read and 170 MB/s writes. Features of this unit include USB 3.0 connectivity, along with being bus powered. Compatibility of this portable SSD extends to modern Windows operating systems, OS X and Linux Kernel 2.4+.
MSRP of the Patriot Supersonic Phoenix in the 512GB flavour is listed at $399.99 with a one-year warranty.

Scope of delivery for the Phoenix is rather simple with just the USB 3.0 cable and drive itself included.

Taking a look at the Phoenix, we find it similar in appearance to the MyDigitalSSD Pocket Vault we reviewed a few months back. On the top of the drive, we find branding against a brushed looking exterior.

On the edge of the drive, we have the USB 3.0 connection.

Looking at the PCB, we find the Phoenix using a Phison 2251 controller with what looks like Toshiba NAND.

Above, we have our sequential results where we found the Phoenix reaching 268 MB/s read and 203.9 MB/s write.

Over to our new Diskbench testing, we found the device to fall off a bit with real data coming in at 177 MB/s moving MKV files and 67 MB/s with small JPG files.

Price/Performance for the Patriot SS Phoenix came in at 83% just behind the BP5 from MyDigitalSSD.
The Patriot Supersonic Phoenix is a great external drive for anyone wanting a mid-range, large capacity external SSD solution. The build quality is quite good, but could use a few upgrades in some of the materials used. However, with that said, the drive fits together quite well, so there are no issues in that department.
Performance of the drive was on par with expectations, where we managed to pass marketing numbers by quite a margin. In our testing, I was able to reach 268 MB/s read and 203 MB/s write. Price/Performance for this solution reached in the area of 83% putting in right in the middle of our charts. The only place where this solution did fall back a bit was in our diskbench testing where we peaked at 177 MB/s with MKV.
