Brazilian GPU repair specialists Paulo Gomes and SidNelson say they have traced a recurring burn issue on GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 4060 boards back to a flaw in the card's VRM design, and not the HDMI port that was initially suspected.
The pair focused their investigation on the GIGABYTE RTX 4060 AERO model after noticing the same failure pattern showing up again and again. Affected boards show heavy PCB carbonization near the HDMI output, which apparently led some owners to assume the display connector was the culprit.
Gomes and SidNelson say that is not the case. Using an oscilloscope and multimeter, they compared damaged samples against a working GIGABYTE card and an Inno3D RTX 4060, checking all four phases of the GPU's power delivery.

What they found points to the current-sense network feeding the PWM controller. This is the circuit that tells the controller how much current is flowing through each of the four VRM phases, so it can balance the load evenly. According to the investigation, the resistor and capacitor values across those four feedback paths were not consistent, which apparently causes the controller to misread how much current each phase is carrying.

One MOSFET ends up overloaded while the others sit comfortably within spec, and eventually it shorts and burns, a failure mode similar in severity to melted RTX 5090 power connectors repair shops have documented elsewhere.
It looks like this is a manufacturing defect rather than something caused by user error, and the repair shop says another customer walked in with the same failure while filming the video, which is not exactly reassuring. The technicians are calling on GIGABYTE to address it through warranty support or a recall, and are pointing Brazilian customers toward the country's consumer protection code in the meantime.

GIGABYTE has not issued a public response, so it is not clear if this is an isolated batch issue or something wider. If you own an RTX 4060 AERO, watching for unusual smells, coil whine, or sudden shutdowns is a reasonable precaution. These are the same warning signs that preceded an ASUS ROG Astral RTX 5090 catching fire earlier this year.
