Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has admitted he's "deeply disappointed" that a new BioShock game hasn't launched in over a decade.

Despite the franchise's strong legacy and gamer demand, the next entry in the series has proven difficult to deliver, with Zelnick blaming the lack of a new BioShock game on the difficulty of finding the "right creative purchase" as the root cause.

Zelnick explained in a recent interview that the company spent years exploring creative avenues that ultimately failed to pan out, wasting both time and money.

"Think about what 'surprise' implies. That's like, one day, everything's awesome, and the next day, I'm like, 'Holy shit.' And I don't run the business that way. But I think if you're saying 'disappointed,' yes. Deeply disappointed," said Zelnick

However, there is a new BioShock game in development at Cloud Chamber, and according to reports, it has seen multiple overhauls, including a leadership change with the arrival of former Diablo boss Rod Fergusson. Fergusson's appointment marked a reset, with the studio revisiting core elements that define a BioShock game.

Zelnick said he is happy with the progress on the new BioShock, but expressed cautious optimism about the project, as its release is still quite far away.

While he's "feeling a lot better" about the current state of development, the game is likely still years from release. Cloud Chamber has also undergone significant restructuring, including a major round of layoffs, further reinforcing the challenges involved.

BioShock fans are still waiting for the next lighthouse to illuminate the franchise's future, and the pressure is on Take-Two and Cloud Chamber to deliver something that lives up to the love for BioShock Infinite, which is widely recognized as one of the best first-person shooter games with RPG elements ever made.
