Activision confirms new Call of Duty will not release on PS4

Activision gets ahead of a recent rumor, squashing reports that this year's Call of Duty game is coming to PS4.

The rumors were false: Call of Duty 2026, which is believed to be Modern Warfare IV, won't be launching on Gen 8 consoles like the PS4 or Xbox One.

"Not sure where this one started, but it's not true. The next Call of Duty is not being developed for PS4," Activision said on Twitter.

The info lines up with an old report from March 2025, wherein now-retired Call of Duty leaker TheGhostOfHope revealed a few details about Modern Warfare IV. Among those details listed was that the game was not in development for old-gen systems. It was also revealed that it was being developed for Project Helix, but that isn't the case, as the next-gen Helix doesn't start even alpha testing until 2027.

That being said, Activision's studios are undoubtedly helping Microsoft iterate and test Project Helix's hardware, which will be powered by several new built-in AI technologies that are co-engineered right into the silicon with AMD's help.

Activision has yet to announce or confirm this year's Call of Duty game, but Microsoft did recently take the franchise out of Xbox Game Pass, signalling a return to more premium-oriented content. This could embolden Activision to try new things with the game and pursue new models now that the project will be a full-price game at launch.

Also, Activision isn't the only publisher to shy away from the PS4, despite the system still being an active driver for revenues at Sony. Other game-makers include Krafton with PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and MiHoYo with Genshin Impact.
