Microsoft warns Windows 11 23H2 is about to be killed off - so you've got to upgrade to 24H2

PC gamers in particular have been avoiding switching to 24H2 given all the bugs that've been flying around - but come November, they'll have no choice.

TL;DR: Windows 11 version 23H2 will reach the end of support on November 11, 2025, which means no more security fixes. So at that stage, holdouts from 24H2 will be forced to upgrade - though you might well be able to skip straight to the 25H2 update.

Windows 10 isn't the only flavor of Microsoft's desktop operating system that's soon to bite the silicon dust - there's also a variant of Windows 11 about to suffer the same fate.

This is Windows 11 23H2, and as Neowin noticed, Microsoft has just issued a reminder that the last-but-one incarnation of Windows 11 is on its way out. And yes - that means for those who've been holding out on upgrading to 24H2, you soon won't have much choice.

You will have a slightly longer stay of execution than Windows 10, though, which has its neck marked for October 14, 2025 - whereas Windows 11 23H2 isn't on the proverbial chopping block until November.

Microsoft reminded us that:

"Windows 11 Home and Pro, version 23H2 will reach the end of updates on November 11, 2025. This version was released in October of 2023."

After that date, version 23H2 won't get any more updates, and that includes those all-important security fixes, so any vulnerabilities that might pop up going forward will be left open for malicious types to (potentially) exploit.

At that point, Windows 11 23H2 probably won't be the penultimate version of the desktop OS, mind you, but rather third back in the pecking order - or that's highly likely, anyway, as version 25H2 should have turned up at that point. This will be a relatively minor update, though, as it's an enablement package - so it's going to be pretty much the same as 24H2.

In contrast, Windows 11 24H2 was a huge upgrade (bringing in a new platform for the OS, Germanium), and so it's not surprising that it has experienced more than its fair share of bugs - which is the reason a fair few people, especially gamers, have stuck with 23H2. Not for much longer, though - you have been warned.
