Borderlands 4 has 30x more guns than its predecessor, making it a veritable guntopia of carnage.

In an interesting development, Epic Games of all places was the first to announce how many guns there will be in Borderlands 4. Epic recently interviewed Gearbox about Borderlands 4, and based on that feature, we know that the game will have 30 billion guns.
Yes, really. The new Borderlands will have 30 billion different gun permutations across a dozen or so weapon brands. That's 30x more than the 1 billion+ guns that Borderlands 3 had. Gearbox is amping up their procedural generation tech with Borderlands 4 to unlock an incredible level of customization, with enough statistical combinations to appease an algebra teacher.
Borderlands 4 has so many guns that Gearbox created their own custom "gun map" that had all the different parts of each weapon across each manufacturer. The idea was to create an easy visual line-of-sight of all the guns to see which fit together best, and whether or not the weapons are representative of their respective makers. It's a mixture of design, creativity, and overall functionality--the attachments still have to fit the guns, etc.
Art director Jimmy Barnett explains the map idea:
"It was this really large gun map where you could see all of the individual parts for all the individual guns, for all the individual manufacturers. It made it so you could see how each of those things were and how we could have those combinations roll together and how they would work--the slides, the animations, the actions, the art of it all fitting together.
"Because a certain gun...if it pumps one way, but there's a long barrel that goes on the bottom...obviously those parts can't go together."
Borderlands 4 releases on September 12, 2025 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
