Amazon found great success with its Fallout adaptation, and its next major live-action video game-to-TV series will be based on BioWare's iconic sci-fi RPG series Mass Effect. Late last year, we got confirmation that Fast & Furious 9 screenwriter Daniel Casey was on board, with Star Trek Beyond writer Doug Jung serving as showrunner.

At the time, Daniel Casey stated that "we have a great pilot script and series outline," with a fully staffed writers' room and production set to kick off this year. The production team is set to include Scott Farris, a senior executive at Amazon MGM Studios and Prime Video, who is on board to help "guide the development and production" of the Mass Effect adaptation.
Scott Farris's credits include Fallout, which his LinkedIn page describes as Amazon's "most commercially successful series to date" that also earned 16 Emmy nominations. Although details on the plot, cast, and setting remain under wraps, it sounds like Amazon is treating its next big-budget sci-fi video game adaptation like the next potential Fallout-style breakout hit.
Regarding the status of the Mass Effect TV series, we know that the showrunner and writers have been writing scripts for approximately a year, indicating that pre-production is well underway. As for when we can expect to watch the first episode, given Daniel Casey's hint that the journey to bring Mass Effect to TV screens as a live-action series will take up to two years of his life, we might have to wait until late 2026.
BioWare and EA's Mass Effect is a multi-billion-dollar franchise, with the original trilogy of games drawing in millions of fans for its cinematic, choice-driven story where players took on the role of the malleable Commander Shepard. If the show decides to re-tell or directly adapt the Commander Shepard saga, it will be interesting to see which version of the character the TV series presents.
BioWare's follow-up Mass Effect: Andromeda received a mixed response, with its story and setting viewed as secondary to the game's robust action-RPG shooting and combat. Currently, BioWare is working on Mass Effect 5, which director Michael Gamble says will continue and maintain the story, tone, and visual style of the original trilogy.
