Borderlands 4 skips price hike unless you remember the price of Borderlands 3

After saying "real fans" would find a way to pay $80 for Borderlands 4 if it was its price, and then backtracking with an apology post explaining the context around his statement, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has announced Borderlands 4 standard edition won't be priced at $80.

The CEO of Gearbox recently took to X to share a link to the Borderlands 4 pre-order page and state that Borderlands 4 wasn't going to get the The Outer Worlds 2 treatment of a price increase to $80, and instead it will retain the typical $69.99 price tag for the standard edition. It appears Gearbox, Pitchford, and 2K Games have taken the route of trying to attract some goodwill back from gamers after the comments made by Pitchford, which created a storm of negative press and discussion around Borderlands 4.

Notably, this is still a price increase when compared to the previous game in the series, as Borderlands 3 standard edition was released at $59.99, Deluxe Edition $79.99, Super Deluxe Edition $99.99, and the Ultimate Loot Chest Collector's Edition at a staggering $299.95. While that may still not sit well with some fans, it should be noted that the same $60 in 2019 is the equivalent of $75.44 when adjusting for inflation, according to usinflationcalculator. So, I suppose it's a good deal?

Borderlands 4 pre-orders are now open, with the game set to launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on September 12, 2025. The Nintendo Switch 2 edition of the game is yet to receive an official release date, with the FAQ section of the Borderlands website stating, the game "ill also come to Nintendo Switch 2 later in 2025".
