TL;DR: The National Museum of Play inducted GoldenEye 007 and Quake into the World Video Game Hall of Fame, recognizing their groundbreaking impact on FPS gaming. Joined by Defender and Tamagotchi, these classics highlight innovation in gameplay and design, expanding the Hall of Fame to 49 influential titles since 2015.

The National Museum of Play in New York has announced the latest additions to the World Video Game Hall of Fame, with two iconic shooters joining the lineup - Rare's GoldenEye 007 for the Nintendo 64 from 1997 and id Software's Quake from 1996.

Atari's Defender and Tamagotchi were also inducted.

Although both games are considered classics in the FPS genre, GoldenEye 007 proved that the genre could work on consoles thanks to its streamlined controls, objective-based mission design, advanced enemy AI, and mix of stealth and gadgets. On the other hand, Quake evolved the gameplay popularized by id's Doom by moving to a fully 3D world with fast-paced keyboard-and-mouse controls that added a big dose of verticality.

These two iconic shooters are joined by Atari's Defender, an arcade and home console game from the early 1980s, and Tamagotchi, the portable pet in your pocket gadget from the 1990s.

These new inductees into the Video Game Hall of Fame were voted on by a mix of public voting and the museum's International Selection Advisory Committee. Some nominees that missed out on being inducted include Age of Empires, Angry Birds, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Defender, and Frogger. Although they missed out, it feels like it's only a matter of time before Age of Empires and Call of Duty are added to the list.

With this fresh batch of games, the National Museum of Play in New York's Video Game Hall of Fame now has 49 games since the program's inception in 2015.

Here's the complete list: Tamagotchi, Quake, Goldeneye 007, Defender, Ultima, SimCity, Resident Evil, Myst, Asteroids, Wii Sports, The Last of Us, Computer Space, Barbie Fashion Designer, Sid Meier's Civilization, Ms. Pac-Man, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Dance Dance Revolution, Space Invaders, Grand Theft Auto III, The Oregon Trail, The Legend of Zelda, The Sims, Sonic the Hedgehog, Tetris, Super Mario Bros., Pac-Man, World of Warcraft, DOOM, Pong, Final Fantasy VII, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?, Pokémon Red and Green, StarCraft, Halo: Combat Evolved, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Street Fighter II, Animal Crossing, Donkey Kong, Minecraft, King's Quest, Centipede, Bejeweled, Super Mario Kart, Mortal Kombat, Microsoft Solitaire, Colossal Cave Adventure, Tomb Raider, Spacewar!, John Madden Football.
