TL;DR: Devolver Digital boldly plans to release a game simultaneously with GTA 6 on May 26, 2026, defying the conventional wisdom around avoiding GTA's launch.

The prevailing sentiment within the games industry is that GTA 6 is a "big iceberg", and that publishers are merely small ships trying to steer clear. Devolver Digital, however, is taking a different approach: facing the industry giant head-on

Devolver Digital first threw down the gauntlet March 26, proclaiming on social media: "Gonna release a game the exact same day and time as GTA6.". The post reached over 2.6 million viewers, with Insider Gaming's Tom Henderson remarking, "Always thinking outside the box."

According to a recent post, the studio is ready and willing to enforce that promise. "You can't escape us," the studio proclaimed - and with that, the stage has been set for a battle of the titans starting May 26, 2026.

Jokes aside, Devolver Digital has a track record of unique, outside-the-box indie hits. It's only fitting that its social media presence borders between viral and unhinged. For example, the publisher's wonky mascot Volvy, which first appeared in 2023 and has since shown up in multiple games. Or Devolver's threats to delist Cult of the Lamb, which the company eventually admitted was a joke, made in light of Unity's new runtime fees.

In terms of the game itself, it's unknown what the publisher has planned. Some might point to Hotline Miami 3 - because why not release a game, on the same date, set in the same city. Or, it could be a completely unknown indie title - built solely for the laughs, and some fun viral publicity.

At any rate, it's reassuringly refreshing to know that some publishers aren't backing down.
