In a discussion with Digital Foundry, developers Nicolas Lopez, Pierre Fortin, and Sebastien Daigneault broke down the game's technical approach - and confirmed that both PSSR support and ray-traced reflections in balanced mode are on the way.
Assassin's Creed Shadows already offers one of the most impressive visual showings on PS5 Pro, largely thanks to its per-pixel ray-traced global illumination. Digital Foundry previously called it a "generational divide in lighting fidelity," noting how the visuals "totally transform the game."
According to the team, support for Sony's PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) will arrive in a future update. The team had originally shipped the game with its own temporal anti-aliasing (TAA) solution, stating it produced better results at the time.
"After an in-depth collaboration with Sony over the past few months, many issues have been addressed-mostly around moving vegetation and water," the developers explained. "We're now confident that the image quality with PSSR will always be better than with TAA."
Alongside this, Ubisoft confirmed that ray-traced reflections will also be enabled in the PS5 Pro's balanced mode. That means players won't have to sacrifice frame rate just to benefit from higher-fidelity lighting effects, a big win for performance-focused players who still want the visual bells and whistles.
Assassin's Creed Shadows already pushes visual boundaries on current-gen hardware - and with these upgrades, the PS5 Pro version is set to push even further. That said, Ubisoft hasn't confirmed exactly when the improvements will be released.
