Continuing our coverage of LaCie, we have the Portable SSD in the 1TB capacity in house.

This solution is a small form factor drive aimed at media professionals that want a high-speed solution for storing and editing digital content. To that point, LaCie says you can transfer an hour of footage to the Portable SSD in less than a minute, and you can edit straight from the drive with speeds up to 540 MB/s. Further, this drive can hold 65 hours of film and 20K photos.

Connectivity is handled via USB-C and compatibility with Windows and macOS is maintained with exFAT formatting. MSRP of the LaCie Portable SSD in the 1TB capacity comes in at $229.99 with a three-year warranty.

Packaging for the Portable SSD offers capacity information at the top right along with performance. Centered you will find an image of the drive.

Included with the Portable SSD, we have both USB-C and C to A cables along with reading material.

The drive itself offers a matte black exterior a slight bit of red pokes out from the edges. Down below we have the USB-C connection and activity LED.

Here you can get an idea of how thick the drive is compared to quarters.

Testing performance, we start with CDM getting 518 MB/s read and 475 MB/s write.

Black Magic shows similar performance 531 MB/s read, and 492 MB/s write, good for 2160p60 with ProRes422.

Over the last year, we have looked at every portable SSD to come out of the Seagate factory; this includes the new and old Game Drive SSD and Seagate Fast SSD. Adding the LaCie Portable SSD to the mix and I can certainly say the LaCie has the highest build quality and while they all share a similar aesthetic, the LaCie with its red on black colorway looks the best too.

As for performance, this drive is at the peak of what USB 3.0 can offer; 530 MB/s read 490 MB/s write. It puts it on par with both the new Game Drive SSD for Xbox and Fast SSD from Seagate. Value-added solutions for this drive include LaCie toolkit which allows you to configure your drive and do automated backups through a "mirrored" folder.

As for pricing, this drive is identical to both the Fast and Game Drive so it will come down to your choice of aesthetics and outside of the Seagate ecosystem it's a touch more expensive than the T5 from Samsung and Extreme from SanDisk.
