Introduction & Specification Details and Close-up

Mechanical keyboards have come a long way in recent years, not only in terms of functionality and features, but also in the quality of the builds, which has led to an era of multiple layers of sound dampening, acoustics, and stabilization (the stuff that stops keys from rattling, especially the larger ones like the spacebar). This is true in both the gaming and productivity spaces. With so many options out there, keyboard makers everywhere are looking to differentiate themselves from the pack while still leaning into modern mechanical keyboard design, which has undergone an almost evolutionary shift in quality.

NuPhy is a boutique keyboard brand, one that focuses on both the productivity and gaming markets, with an eye toward retro-meets-modern aesthetics blended with high-quality construction and performance. As someone who has a fondness for the era of beige PC hardware from the 1990s, the NuPhy Node 100 High Profile Wireless Keyboard in Lunar White strikes the right tone of that everything-beige era while still maintaining a modern look with a few vibrant touches, thanks to a trio of colorful keycaps. Of course, looks aren't the be-all and end-all of any piece of hardware, but when paired with great features and impressive performance, they can often be the catalyst for choosing one model over another. This is true of cases, graphics cards, and, yes, keyboards, too.

As the name suggests, the NuPhy Node 100 High Profile is the high-profile keycap variant of its Node series, with the 100 referring to its being a full-sized keyboard with a NumPad, system keys, and even a few extra custom keys. Although it's primarily a versatile tri-mode productivity keyboard for both Mac and Windows users, it's also an option that can be used for gaming, thanks to NuPhy's impressive web-based NuPhyIO software that includes support for SOCD or FlashTap for competitive shooters. However, the real stars of the show are the creamy custom Blush Max linear switches and the MSA keycaps, which make it a fantastic keyboard for typing and writing.

Design & Software

Design

Priced at $109.95, the NuPhy Node 100 High Profile is an affordable and generally impressive full-sized mechanical keyboard with tri-mode connectivity, especially when you factor in the underlying hardware and construction. The gasket-mount design includes multiple layers of damping, plate-mounted stabilizers for a smooth, rattle-free typing experience, hot-swappable switches, and double-shot MSA keycaps. For those wondering, MSA keycaps are defined by their rounded tops, which are both old-school and best suited for typing, as they kind of 'hold' your fingers. The NuPhy Node 100 High Profile is a relatively large keyboard, measuring 318.1mm in length, with plenty of room to ensure the arrow keys, function row, and NumPad don't feel cramped.

NuPhy Node 100 High Profile Wireless Keyboard Review - A Productivity Winner, for Windows and Mac 4

One of the concessions made to keep overall costs down was to use ABS (plastic) for the top and bottom cases rather than aluminum. That said, the build quality is still impressive, and when you pair the switches with the smooth keycaps, dampening, and other layers, you've got a clean, pleasant, thocky-like sound that is also quiet. In other words, the NuPhy Node 100 High Profile has the acoustics to match the great type-feel. For this review, we tested the NuPhy Node 100 with the company's custom Blush Max linear switches that are responsive and fast, with a lightweight 42g operating force and an actuation point of 2.0mm. As the switches are hot-swappable, NuPhy offers two other variants: a tactile option and a more standard Red-style linear switch.

As for the physical design, above the NumPad, you've got a section of four customizable keys (including the pastel yellow and red keys), with a small touch strip located in the top-right. This too is programmable and a functional replacement for a control dial. With the ability to tap and slide, the default functionality serves as audio controls: swipe right to increase volume, swipe left to lower volume, and tap to mute. It's serviceable, and it works. However, after getting used to it, after several days of heavy use, we would have rather had a tactile control knob.

Although the NuPhy Node 100 features north-facing RGB lighting, the overall effect is a little dull or not quite as bright as expected. In fact, when you factor in that the keycaps are not the shinethrough variety for the legends, even with detailed RGB controls and presets, you can barely see them in a brightly lit room or office environment. Rounding out the design, you've got a relatively large 4000mAh capacity battery that offers up to 1000 hours of use between charges with lights turned off.

Software

As a company that focuses squarely on keyboards, the web-based NuPhyIO app for customizing the NuPhy Node 100 High Profile is impressively responsive, detailed, and packed with options. Remapping keys is not only as simple as selecting the key and choosing the corresponding action, but here you've got a long list of options to choose from, with the secondary function layer of the keyboard getting its own section.

Naturally, lighting gets its own section, and there's a large number of presets to choose from and customize. You can also adjust the lighting of the RGB dot-matrix LED bar at the top left of the keyboard, which serves as a purely visual, retro-inspired indicator that flashes while typing. NuPhyIO is a robust, detailed web-based customization solution that even includes game-friendly features, such as SOCD.

It doesn't stop there, as you've also got detailed Macro recording controls, the ability to turn off things like the Start button to create a game-mode-style profile, plus configure various power saving modes. In fact, when using NuPhyIO with the NuPhy Node 100 High Profile, it will present a bespoke version of the settings and customization options depending on whether you're in Windows or Mac mode, and you can also change the keyboard layout to suit different styles, locations, and country-specific layouts.

Productivity and Gaming Performance

With the MSA keycaps, fantastic dampening, mounting, and stabilization, typing with the NuPhy Node 100 High Profile keyboard is great. As someone who can write thousands of words each day covering tech news and reviewing PC hardware, the fast linear switches and all of the other features of the NuPhy Node 100 have actually increased my overall typing speed and accuracy. So on that note, as a pure productivity keyboard that looks great, sounds great, and feels great to type with, it's definitely a productivity winner. It also supports Bluetooth connectivity, so it can easily be paired with a wide range of devices, including those running iOS or Android.

And even though you can customize pretty much everything on the keyboard, as well as replace things like keycaps and switches, some smart out-of-the-box design decisions add to the overall experience of using the NuPhy Node 100 daily with Windows. Right off the bat, some of the default settings for a few customizable keys include a dedicated key for switching to desktop view, one for bringing up the taskbar, and another for enabling multitasking mode, which lets you quickly see and access all of your open windows. And even though I wasn't the biggest fan of using the touch bar for media controls, there was still quick access to secondary media controls on the function row.

Gaming Productivity

With responsive 1,000 Hz polling over wireless and wired, the ability to set up SOCD for seamless strafing and dodging fire in a competitive shooter, and in-depth customization options to enhance the gaming experience, the NuPhy Node 100 High Profile still feels like a productivity keyboard, first and foremost. This isn't to say that it's not perfectly capable of playing a shooter like Arc Legends or an action-RPG like Diablo 4; it's just that the Blush Max linear switches and MSA keycaps are better suited for touch typing as opposed to WASD action.

Keyboard Click Sound Level

To test a keyboard's overall sound level, we use the Ozito Digital Sound Level Meter, capturing the sentence "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" multiple times and recording the maximum dB level. This indicates how "loud" the switches used are for everyday usage. The following chart showcases where the NuPhy Node 100 High Profile Wireless Keyboard sits.

Final Thoughts

With a fantastic type-feel and impressive productivity features for both Windows and Mac users, the NuPhy Node 100 High Profile is a tri-mode, full-sized wireless and wired keyboard, and the latest release from a company that has been delivering excellent (and stylish) keyboards. Even though the decision to add a programmable touch bar for tap-and-slide controls feels more like a gimmick than an essential feature, it's hard to fault the overall design, customization options, and build quality. And for those who might like what they've heard so far but aren't a fan of beige, the NuPhy Node 100 High Profile is also available in a dark grey and light pink colorway.

NuPhy Node 100 High Profile Wireless Keyboard Review - A Productivity Winner, for Windows and Mac 13

Ultimately, NuPhy has absolutely nailed the most important aspects of a productivity-focused keyboard: a great type-feel (including everything from key stability to the keycap finish to the acoustics), a full layout, and smart additions and shortcuts to speed up daily tasks. Available in different colors and with different switch options, there's also a more compact Node 75 option for those with limited desk space. Although it doesn't quite hit the same gaming highs as it does on the productivity front, this is a definite value winner for those looking to enter the realm of modern, premium-feeling full-sized mechanical keyboards.
