The Bottom Line

ASUS wins in the design department, and with the power of the RTX 3090 Ti GPU itself: match it with a huge 4K 120Hz HDR display.

Introduction

It's currently 1:14AM here in South Australia, and I'm up still writing, benchmarking, and doing a million other things to get these GeForce RTX 3090 Ti reviews out the gate. Buuuut... ASUS didn't get me their insane new ROG Strix LC GeForce RTX 3090 Ti OC Edition until around 3:45PM today.

ASUS ROG Strix LC GeForce RTX 3090 Ti OC Edition Review 511

I've been scrambling to get it done, but it's done... I wanted to include overclocking results but they will come tomorrow, to see just how far we can push the ROG Strix LC RTX 3090 Ti.

ASUS has unleashed its very fastest graphics card with the new ROG Strix LC GeForce RTX 3090 Ti, offering NVIDIA's very best GA102 GPU, new 450W+ TDP power insanity, and suped-up 24GB of GDDR6X memory that's now at 21Gbps and pushing an insane 1TB/sec+ of memory bandwidth.

ASUS ROG Strix LC GeForce RTX 3090 Ti OC Edition Review 530

NVIDIA is pushing everything to the limits with its new GeForce RTX 3090 Ti, and with everyone worried about GPU + GDDR6X temps... there's nothing to worry about with the ROG Strix LC GeForce RTX 3090 Ti. Sub 60C GPU temps, silent operation, plenty of performance for 4K 120FPS gaming and beyond.

ASUS ROG Strix LC GeForce RTX 3090 Ti OC Edition Review 525

ASUS does it all with a card that looks absolutely gorgeous, but I do question the need for the huge dual-fan AIO cooler. I mean... MSI provides the same performance with its custom GeForce RTX 3090 Ti SUPRIM X graphics card and it's purely air-cooled with its triple-fan cooler. The GPU temps are higher (70-72C) but hey, if GPU temps are your thing then the AIO cooler is what you want.

If you're a huge ASUS ROG fan, then you know what to do: CLICK THAT BUY BUTTON.

New 16-pin PCIe 5.0 Power Connector

NVIDIA's new GeForce RTX 3090 Ti does one thing very different to the previous flagship GeForce RTX 3090, which had ASUS deploying 3 x 8-pin PCIe power connectors on its custom RTX 3090 designs... but the new RTX 3090 Ti uses a single 16-pin PCIe power connector.

ASUS ROG Strix LC GeForce RTX 3090 Ti OC Edition Review 513

But... how will you plug your PSU into the new 16-pin PCIe power connector, which you don't have? Well, that's why you'll use the 1 x 16-pin PCIe power connector to 3 x 8-pin PCIe power connectors. Your PSU might be able to handle it, but I would suggest looking at upgrading your PSU for the new GeForce RTX 3090 Ti... especially with the RTX 40 series GPUs right around the corner, and man they're going to need all the power they can get.

That's why MSI sent over their new MSI MPG A1000G power supply, pumping 1000W of power with 80 PLUS Gold-certified efficiency. It also looks great, with MSI using patterns that can be infused beautifully -- with tons of power at your disposal -- with the MSI MPG VELOX 100P AIRFLOW PC case and MSI MPG Z690 CARBON WIFI motherboard.

ASUS ROG Strix LC GeForce RTX 3090 Ti OC Edition Review 533
ASUS ROG Strix LC GeForce RTX 3090 Ti OC Edition Review 534

MSI's new MPG A1000G PSU has a single-railed design, which will deliver clean currents under heavy loads... making it perfect for MSI's new flagship GeForce RTX 3090 Ti SUPRIM X graphics card. MSI's new MPG A1000G PSU is also "future-proof" as it meets the new standards for the upcoming PCIe 5.0 specification... for even higher-wattage GPUs.

I used MSI's new MPG A1000G PSU for all of my GeForce RTX 3090 Ti reviews, starting here with MSI's new flagship GeForce RTX 3090 Ti SUPRIM X. I will also be using the MPG A1000G PSU for NVIDIA's new GeForce RTX 3090 Ti Founders Edition, and the new flagship ASUS ROG Strix LC GeForce RTX 3090 Ti that should be with me any minute now.

RTX 3090 Ti 24GB Tech Specs

NVIDIA is using the full GA102 on its new GeForce RTX 3090 Ti, with 10,752 CUDA cores compared to the 10,496 CUDA cores on the same (GA102 GPU) as the GeForce RTX 3090. There are other tweaks, with the same 82 RT cores but 336 Textures Units (328 TUs on the RTX 3090).

There's the same 24GB of GDDR6X on the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti as the previous GeForce RTX 3090, on the same 384-bit memory interface -- but with a big change: it's clocked at 21Gbps -- providing it with up to 1TB/sec of memory bandwidth, up from the 936GB/sec on the RTX 3090.

ASUS ROG Strix LC GeForce RTX 3090 Ti OC Edition Review 512

However, I've overclocked every custom GeForce RTX 3090 graphics card that I've got -- before, and leading up into this review -- and pushed the 24GB GDDR6X up over 21Gbps and enjoyed 1TB/sec of memory bandwidth for the last year or more.

Another huge upgrade over the RTX 3090 is that the new RTX 3090 Ti has its spiffy new 16-pin PCIe 5.0-ready power connector with up to 450W available on the RTX 3090 Ti... up from the 350W on the RTX 3090. NVIDIA is making plenty of references to its near 10-year-old TITAN RTX, and sure it kinda is... but it's replacing the RTX 3090, not the Ampere-based TITAN RTX that never materialized.

And if this is the Ampere TITAN RTX... then maybe it should've been called that, so I will not be referring to the TITAN RTX (even though I could, I have the results recently tested on my Ryzen 9 5900X) but no one in their right mind still has that as a gamer... they'd have a new RTX 30 series GPU so they have RT + DLSS... right?!

Right, NVIDIA?!

Anyway... onwards with the review!

ASUS ships the ROG Strix LC GeForce RTX 3090 Ti OC Edition graphics card in a box worthy of the power of the GPU inside. The box is absolutely huge, and will command a large portion of your shelf... let's face it: if you're buying something this good, you're going to showcase the box as well. I do, because I love it ;)

Man... the ASUS ROG Strix LC GeForce RTX 3090 Ti OC Edition just looks like something else. There's not much different here between the ROG Strix LC RTX 3090 Ti and ROG Strix LC RTX 3080 Ti, apart from a good chunk more power (up to 480W), 24GB of GDDR6X now clocked at 21Gbps, and a chunkier Ampere GPU.

ASUS ROG Strix LC GeForce RTX 3090 Ti OC Edition Review 503

ASUS is going with an AIO cooler that is attached -- rather cheaply I might add, I truly expected... no wanted more from ASUS -- to the graphics card at the top.

This means instead of the card being a huge 3.5-slot or bigger 4-slot GPU, it can be just over a dual-slot card... and radically reduced GPU temps to boot.

The new 16-pin PCIe power connector, which then connects out to 3 x 8-pin PCIe power connectors and commands up to 500W or so of power. You'll easily pull 480W with overclocking, so be careful on your PSU when you're shopping around.

ASUS does great work with changing up the display connectivity on the ROG Strix LC GeForce RTX 3090 Ti OC Edition, as it does with its ROG Strix RTX 30 series GPUs, by including a second HDMI 2.1 connector. The other RTX 3090 Ti that I've got here (the MSI RTX 3090 Ti SUPRIM X) doesn't have a second HDMI 2.1 connector, and that matters to people -- and it is also more "future-proof", too -- especially since 4K 120Hz can be fed through HDMI 2.1.

That's plenty of CPU power and offers a great upgrade over the Ryzen 7 3800X that I was using previously.

I will be upgrading this system in a few months, and maybe running it side-by-side with the new Alder Lake-powered Intel Core i9-12900K processor. I'm using one inside of the Allied M.O.A.B.-I gaming PC that I reviewed a few months ago, and man the 12900K is like the Godzilla of CPUs.

Performance Thoughts

Please, please, please... do not buy the new GeForce RTX 3090 Ti for 1080p gaming. I mean, if you want to have like 300FPS in multiplayer titles or something because you've got a 360FPS display, then sure. But for the most part you don't need to spend this type of money for gaming at 1920 x 1080.

Performance Thoughts

Now, this is where the real fun begins: 2560 x 1440. In a flagship game like CD PROJEKT RED's masterpiece Cyberpunk 2077, with the ASUS ROG Strix LC RTX 3090 Ti whizzing along with 98FPS average at 1440p... compared to the 90FPS of the RTX 3090 and RTX 3080 Ti GPUs.

You're going to be speeding along at 120FPS average in Forza Horizon 5, 60FPS+ if you turned RT and enabled DLSS in a beautiful-looking game like Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition. 1440p gaming is going to be no issue for the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti, it dominates here as well.

Performance Thoughts

4K gaming is where the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti shines.

Previously, NVIDIA still owned the performance crown in Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K with its previous flagship GeForce RTX 3090 which spits out 47FPS average, but the new RTX 3090 Ti pushes it further... right up to 51FPS average. With RT + DLSS enabled, you can enjoy 4K 60FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 on the RTX 3090 Ti.

Forza Horizon 5 pushes 92FPS (up from 88FPS on the RTX 3090) and 42FPS in Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition (a decent leap from the RTX 3090 and RTX 3080 Ti with 38FPS average each). NVIDIA passes AMD in the Radeon-friendly Assassin's Creed: Valhalla with the new RTX 3090 Ti hitting 70FPS, compared to the RX 6900 XT with 67FPS (identical to the RTX 3090, too).

I've been playing Warzone and Overwatch on the ASUS ROG Strix LC GeForce RTX 3090 Ti OC Edition graphics card (and until I put the ASUS RTX 3090 Ti inside of my rig, it was the MSI GeForce RTX 3090 Ti SUPRIM X) on a 77-inch LG 4K 120Hz HDR OLED TV and man... there is nothing better than the RTX 3090 Ti for 4K 120FPS gaming. It's the ultimate GPU.

Power Consumption & Temps

ASUS ROG Strix LC GeForce RTX 3090 Ti OC Edition Review 701
ASUS ROG Strix LC GeForce RTX 3090 Ti OC Edition Review 702

I actually squeezed more out of my custom MSI GeForce RTX 3090 Ti SUPRIM X than I did the liquid-cooled ASUS ROG Strix LC GeForce RTX 3090 Ti OC Edition. I'll be re-reviewing both of the new RTX 3090 Ti GPUs with overclocking results in the next 24 hours, so be prepared... no not you, my power bills.

What's Hot, What's Not

ASUS ROG Strix LC GeForce RTX 3090 Ti OC Edition Review 511

What's Hot

  • Sub 60C temps on this monster GPU, holy cooling, ASUS: Yeah, ASUS did some great work here with the AIO cooler... reducing the GPU temps down to sub 60C during benching and gaming sessions. It's a bulky AIO cooler and I don't know if I'd personally buy this, but you do get some wicked low GPU temps... at a cost.
  • Awesome ASUS ROG Strix LC design work: It looks FANTASTIC, at least the actual graphics card... not so much the annoying AIO cooler.
  • The best GPU on the planet: If you want the fastest GPU on the planet, look no further than the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti -- ASUS has a liquid-cooled AIO cooler on its ROG Strix LC RTX 3090 Ti variant -- offering blistering performance in every game, every resolution, and every test you can throw at it. The RTX 3090 Ti laughs in their faces, that is until Ada Lovelace and RDNA 3 later this year.
  • The fastest GDDR6X memory on the planet: NVIDIA already had super-fast GDDR6X memory on the GeForce RTX 3090, which was clocked at 19.5Gbps -- and overclocked to 21Gbps easily -- but now 21Gbps is offered as default.
  • 24GB GDDR6X operates FAR cooler than RTX 3090, while clocked faster: The 24GB of GDDR6X memory on the GeForce RTX 3090 can run at up to 110C when stressed, with my NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Founders Edition hitting 110C instantly when mining. But now... the 24GB of even-faster GDDR6X clocked at 21Gbps runs at just 65-70C or so... chilly in comparison.
ASUS ROG Strix LC GeForce RTX 3090 Ti OC Edition Review 520
  • ASUS includes not one, but two HDMI 2.1 ports: If you want to run HDMI 2.1 to your new TV or gaming monitor as well as another HDMI 2.1-powered display, ASUS includes dual HDMI 2.1 ports on its ROG Strix RTX 30 series GPUs. The flagship ROG Strix LC RTX 3090 Ti not only is the most powerful GPU right now, but it has some of the strongest display connectivity, too.
  • The best GPU for 4K 120FPS gaming: I'm a massive advocate of 4K 120FPS gaming, as I personally own a 77-inch 4K 120Hz LG OLED TV and the RTX 3090 has been my GPU of choice since it was released, but now that honor goes to the new RGeForce TX 3090 Ti graphics card. Incredible stuff @ 4K 120FPS, especially when you're playing a game with DLSS enabled.
  • The only GPU for 8K 60FPS gaming: If you are gaming at 8K 60FPS on a new TV through HDMI 2.1 then you're all good to go... once again, especially if you've got DLSS enabled... then the 24GB of ultra-fast GDDR6X memory and new RTX 3090 Ti is here to rock your 8K gaming world.
  • It's finally here: NVIDIA was meant to release their new flagship GeForce RTX 3090 Ti at the end of January... then nothing... and now NVIDIA has released the RTX 3090 Ti without a single word about why it was delayed by two entire months.
ASUS ROG Strix LC GeForce RTX 3090 Ti OC Edition Review 518
  • 16-pin PCIe power connector: ASUS uses the new 16-pin PCIe power connector on its custom ROG Strix LC GeForce RTX 3090 Ti, which converts over to 3 x 8-pin PCIe power connectors and up to 480-500W of power consumption. But the new 16-pin connector is WAY smaller, and looks SO much better on the card itself.
  • Better than overclocked RTX 3080 Ti or RTX 3090: The new RTX 3090 Ti is here to be your new king.
  • Not LHR, so great for mining: No Lite Hash Rate (LHR) gimping here, you've got the full crypto mining performance here with the new GeForce RTX 3090 Ti... if that matters, of course. Please don't go out and buy a bunch of RTX 3090 Ti cards for crypto mining farms, mmmkay?

What's Not

  • Far too noisy for an AIO-cooled RTX 3090 Ti: ASUS really dropped the ball in the noise department with the ROG Strix LC RTX 3090 Ti, as it ends up making more noise than the air-cooled MSI RTX 3090 Ti SUPRIM X graphics card. Sigh... not good when you're spending this kinda money on a GPU.

Final Thoughts

ASUS delivers as it always does with its flagship ROG Strix GPU, with the new ROG Strix LC GeForce RTX 3090 Ti OC Edition driving every dial to 11, and then some -- I mean it has a huge AIO on it... but it really wasn't worth it in the end -- unless you love that style.

ASUS ROG Strix LC GeForce RTX 3090 Ti OC Edition Review 527

Personally, I do love the style of the card, but the bulky AIO cooler is annoying. It doesn't provide any additional performance over the purely triple-fan air-cooled MSI GeForce RTX 3090 Ti SUPRIM X that I just finished reviewing. I expected the ASUS to walk all over it... and at this stage where the RTX 3090 Ti is only a few FPS faster than the RTX 3090... "walk all over" is another 1-2FPS over the MSI RTX 3090 Ti SUPRIM X.

But, it's not.

ASUS has all the style, and it has that huge AIO cooler... but we're already at our limits here. You won't push over 2200MHz out of the GPU, and I was reaching walls on the GDDR6X memory at 22.5Gbps. If you want wicked low GPU temps, then oh yeah, the ROG Strix LC GeForce RTX 3090 Ti OC Edition has your back.

ASUS ROG Strix LC GeForce RTX 3090 Ti OC Edition Review 516

Right out of the box you're going to enjoy chilly GPU temps of around 55-60C under gaming and benchmarking loads, while the GDDR6X memory runs at around 64C average. This is a HUUUUGE difference to the 24GB of GDDR6X memory on the RTX 3090 that cooks your dinner at 110C.

But unfortunately -- and this is a massive, unfortunately -- the ROG Strix LC RTX 3090 Ti was louder for me when I was benchmarking and gaming than the air-cooled MSI RTX 3090 Ti SUPRIM X. Ehhh.

ASUS has its fans and I'm sure we all know someone who knows a ROG fan or enthusiast in their social circle, and knows that they'll be absolutely salivating at the ROG Strix LC GeForce RTX 3090 Ti. They don't care about the cost, or that it isn't the very best RTX 3090 Ti, they care that it's ASUS' new ROG Strix RTX 3090 Ti.

ASUS ROG Strix LC GeForce RTX 3090 Ti OC Edition Review 514

I wouldn't recommend the ASUS ROG Strix LC GeForce RTX 3090 Ti over an air-cooled GPU, simply because it offers no performance leap over the air-cooled RTX 3090 Ti cards. The GPU temps being so low are awesome, but not awesome enough to have a huge AIO cooler installed in my PC... or that it's louder than my MSI RTX 3090 Ti SUPRIM X. Sorry, ASUS.

From a pure aesthetics perspective, the new GPU reminds me so much of my favorite custom AMD Radeon RX 6000 series GPU: the SAPPHIRE TOXIC Radeon RX 6900 XT Limited Edition graphics card. That is a fully-tweaked Navi 21-powered GPU with an AIO cooler, too. It looks great, and if that's what you want... then you're going to get a bloody fantastic RTX 3090 Ti with impossibly low GPU temps.

ASUS ROG Strix LC GeForce RTX 3090 Ti OC Edition Review 513

And then let's face it: you wouldn't tell the difference between any custom GeForce RTX 3090 Ti in a blind test. If you are pumping away at 120FPS+ do you think you're going to tell the difference between 118FPS and 121FPS? In the words of Kevin McCallister from Home Alone... I don't think so.

ASUS loses big points with the lack of performance gains over an air-cooled RTX 3090 Ti, more noise than an air-cooled RTX 3090 Ti, and has a huge bulky AIO cooler. If you're a big ROG enthusiast then the ASUS ROG Strix LC GeForce RTX 3090 Ti OC Edition graphics card is going to be one for your collection.
