Michael Condry is well-known in the games industry. At Visceral, he directed the excellent horror-survival game Dead Space for EA, then co-founded Call of Duty developer Sledgehammer Games. Now Condry is starting up a brand new studio to work on a new unannounced game for 2K Games. The seasoned developer will sit as president of the new unnamed studio and make key executive decisions layered beneath the 2K Games label, which is overseen by parent company Take-Two Interactive. Condry and 2K are currently hiring devs to fill out the ranks for the studio that's being built from the ground up.

This move comes at an opportune time for 2K Games. The label is mostly known for its sports games, Borderlands, and BioShock, but the latter two have been missing in action as of late. Borderlands 3 is in development, and will probably release after April 2019, but overall the 2K label has been somewhat stale and lacking variety. Condry's new studio--which has yet to be named--will help fortify 2K Games' game selection.

We don't know very much about the game itself though. While the press release doesn't explicitly mention AAA, Condry's background of work heavily implies the project will be a big one. Also the game is part of 2K Games, not Take-Two's new Private Division label that's focused on AA games like Obsidian's new RPG The Outer Worlds.

We're also betting the project will be an action game of some sort instead of a more niche-style genre like RPGs. Action games are much more widely appealing to a mass-market audience, and Take-Two should push some sort of online element that's monetized in some form.

Here's a few quotes from the press release:

"At 2K, we offer our collective audience a variety of engaging and captivating entertainment experiences. We continually seek opportunities to empower and invest in the right people and ideas," said David Ismailer, President at 2K.

"Michael's unparalleled creative, production and leadership accolades are well-documented and deserved. We are greatly inspired not only by his passion but the potential for his new studio to complement our existing portfolio and development expertise. We welcome Michael to the 2K family and look forward to seeing our new Silicon Valley studio flourish in the months and years to come."

"Great games come from the passion of a team driven by the pursuit of quality and the empowerment of an independent studio model. 2K's studios have creative and technical autonomy, backed by a world-class infrastructure of support, and that offers the perfect recipe to build a new studio and craft experiences that will lead the next generation of gaming for fans everywhere," said Condrey.

"David and the dedicated people at 2K and Take-Two have an extensive history of rich and established brands, as well as a long tenure of executive leadership committed to supporting the ambitions of their independent studio teams."
